My bad luck runs deep it seems. I ordered a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136314 (WD 500 GB Scorpio Blue)

but got this instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148374 (Seagate 500 GB Momentus 7200.4 rpm)

I understand that this drive has a higher risk of failling. So What do I do now?

I couldn't wait with getting a new one, so I had to gamble, and get the best out of it.

I have also gotten a WD External 500 GB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136406

    My question is:

1)What can I do to back up my stuff? I am gonna have work on this... Is there any sort of raid configuration, split the hard drive in two or some back up, that can help me should I fail?

I have never bothered backing up anything. I just always took the risk. I never had a drive fail on me either. I guess I have been lucky.. but seeing all these bad experiences with this new drive has gotten me worried.

If some of you have back up tips, it would be great?

On mac you have that time machine thing. Is there anything like that for Windows? I am gonna carry my 500 GB external with me around allot, filling it up with Media files mainly...

If you have already started using the drive I do not know if Newegg is going to replace it for you.
If you havent used the drive email newegg, and they should be more than happy to fix the error since it was on there end.
You can ask for replacement or refund.

I would not accept the 7200.4 over the WD5000BEVT, even if it is worth more.

You can manually copy files from one harddrive to another, simple and easy to do, or you can use software to do it.

I would give NewEgg a buzz, and tell them they need to take the drive back. Regardless of if you started using it or not, they sent you the wrong device.

    I disagree with the "regardless".

If you don't use the drive, and contact them right away, NewEgg would be great at crediting you the shipping cost of sending it back, along with getting you the right item. With a little bit of prodding, they might have even shipped the second drive more quickly.

However, once you use the drive, it is no longer new, and NewEgg can't legally sell it as such. This causes the problem. They made the first mistake; the OP has compounded it with a second mistake.

To the OP: You can contact NewEgg and see what they say, but IMO, that should have been your move the moment you opened the package and realized you didn't get what you ordered. I can't understand the logic of "you couldn't wait" when now you'll have to spend all of this additional time backing up your system and restoring it to a new drive as well.

P.S. If you want a good backup solution, I'd consider Acronis TrueImage Home, which can be had for a pretty reasonable price.

Erm lets just say drive failure depends on luck the particular drive set you own.
For me if I was in your shoes I keep the seagate.
If I remembered correctly the seagate drive is more expensive than the WD.
Performance is slightly lower but it should be less hot.

Tell newegg that you paid a person to have this installed and you noticed after the install that the drive info displayed in your OS does not match the description of the product you ordered. If you don't get any answer or they give you the run around contact your bank or credit card company and they can handle this for you.

newegg can NOT RESELL the driver PERIOD once its been sold even if not used by you and you sent it back, it then has to be a open box item. so it doesnt matter if you used it or not. i had 2 of these seagates fail on me. i went back to the wd500gb after that. i also have to say i like the hitachi 500gb also its a really good drive as well.
