I was just wondering whether or not a DIY(do it yourself) graphic card upgrade is possible on the Sager/Clevo as I am really interested in upgrading my laptop even more in the future. Some laptops have their graphic cards integrated/soldered onto their motherboards so would this be the case on sager/clevo laptops?? if not, would it be easy to replace??

Hopefully someone can shed some light about this topic as it will help me greatly!! Thanks!!

They're perfectly upgradeable. From what I've seen, the ease at swapping parts in and out of a Sager/Clevo is one of their biggest selling points. So it's completely doable.

However, there have been some BIOS issues that have cropped up with this new series of laptops. I'm not too familiar with this but something about the older gen (last year's 81xx models) not being supported anymore so even though the GPU can be swapped out, the BIOS can't read it? There's a petition going around to get support for last year's models around here somewhere.

the np81xx series can be upgraded now, you just need to buy the kit. that is for the 7970m

the problem with that series is that the new gpus support already optimus and enduro, those are switchable gpus tech. and thus they would fail.

Perhaps. Perhaps not. While you will physically be able to seat an MxM card in the version in your laptop, there are a lot of variables at play (like VBIOS and iGPU mentioned by Mr MM and w00pw0p). But there are also additional issues like your LCD, cooling system, etc.

Here's one place to read up on these issues for some Sager/Clevo models:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...2-official-sager-news-thread.html#post8564613

Also, the Sager/Clevo power and cooling systems are designed with the MxM cards rated for a certain TDP wattage. For example, if the mobo was designed for a card with 75watts TDP, and you put in a newly designed pushes 100watts TDP, you may be damaging other mobo components due to the higher power requirements/ heat dissipation. See Sager's post regarding this- http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...tes-clevo-hm-model-series-53.html#post8608602

Also, may want to peruse through this thread for additional GPU "Upgradability" issues- http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...rade-compatibility-thread-testers-wanted.html

Or post to the Clevo/Sager forum if you have something more specific.

Finally, in regards to the Online Petition mentioned by w00pw0p, you can follow the entire event of how things unfolded here - http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...ition-bios-updates-clevo-hm-model-series.html

MSI uses MXM in more models than Clevo/Sager, and they have had more cases of a laptop being upgraded beyond its released specification and listed compatibility, although, their latest 16f3 and 1762 laptops with Optimus don't seem to support the 7970m (or any AMD cards I am guessing).

The 16f2 works with the 7970m, so does the gx660 I think, these are very upgradeable laptops. Optimus and Enduro are causing problems these days.
