Had my Dell Inspiron N5110 for just over a year now (damn outta warranty) and started getting grey lines across the screen which would sometimes disappear if flipped the screen back and forth.

After this had happened for a while I started getting frustrated and wacked the back of my screen (not the front of the lcd). Now I have damaged my lc screen. A line appears in the bottom which I can see very faintly even when the screen is turned off completely.

My laptop works fine when plugging it into my friends samsung external monitor.

So my impression is that that my video cable either failed or was pinched. And then I broke the LCD screen.

What should I do now? Can I order a new screen a fit it myself and still have the cable problem, which I could then take to a repair guy (saving me getting charged a lot for both screen replacement and cable fixing... kinda worried they will say more things are wrong with it and change me more)

    OR

just take it to a repair shop and get it all fixed. kinda worried that it will cost a lot and i am being silly but worried they might swap my parts.

    All advice appreciated.

    Thanks

Most places I have dealt with; they will either refuse to use any parts I could supply them with, or, they will charge handsomely for doing so (much more so than if they were to source all parts themselves).

In your position I would ask for a quote from at least a couple (if you have a choice) of vendors and compare that to what you were able to track it down for yourself. Let them know what you have tracked the parts down for (after they have provided you with a quote) and see if they're willing to match that (even a little).

Also; don't ask for the screen to be replaced - ask for the problem of the lines to be resolved (that is the service you want to pay for and to have resolved!!!). Ask for the length of their warranty after repair and also get a feel for them as people too (are they willing to help and are they 'genuine' and most importantly: do they seem capable of following through with the repairs of the issues you now face...).

Sure; it may cost a little more than the parts you can source... but you are almost guaranteed that they will also fix the root/underlying problem(s) and not just the visible/superficial 'symptoms' that you're now seeing.

    Hope this helps.

    Good luck.

if you're comfortable replacing the panel itself which would seem to be necessary at a minimum, here and here is the part (first link has a video too). i've ordered from parts-people before, but not from laptopscreen. i personally would be okay purchasing from either.

Thanks for the replies guys. I managed to successfully take out and put back in my old lcd screen. So im going to order a new screen tomorrow. However, im sure the problem of having the grey lines will still be there.

I couldnt find any videos related to my laptop on removing the lcd video cable and replacing it? are there any around??

The problem of the grey lines MIGHT be due to the LCD itself, in which case you wouldn't have to kick yourself for breaking it just a little more.

I've ordered from laptopscreen before without any issue. They have some good prices on harder to find LCDs.

Usually you can access the screen cable by pulling up the hinge cover and or keyboard, but sometimes you have to pretty much completely disassemble the laptop.
