Is there an online guide or list of different processors, rated for speed and general quality? I've been shopping for an inexpensive computer--preferrably a Pavilion under $700--and am finding it difficult differentiating between the wide range of processors that are available.
What I want to avoid is buying a computer on clearance at a CompUSA type place with a processor that is woefully outdated or was discontinued because it was very inefficient. So what I'm looking for is some kind of "master list" with speeds, ratings, age, battery drain, etc. Thanks!

If you just look closer at stickies...

WTF! I hate people.

Thanks for the attitude, guys. Isn't the point of this forum to ask questions that I don't know the answer to?
p.s. I think non-techy people should be able to come here and ask questions without the snarky attitude, even if the answers are obvious to the technically inclined. -
-
wolfraider gave the best answer. If you still have questions I will try and answer and no snarky attitude I promise.
-
Wolfraider's link was very helpful, thanks. Questions answered (and now I know that CPU = processor
).
That thread isn't a sticky but it should be, or is there some kind of "Hall of Fame Reference Forum"? -
It is a sticky. Look at the first thread.
-
In the hardware section the very 1st thread, open, the very 1st in bold letters The Ultimate CPU Guide that is what you read and the sticky or sub-sticky. There are other useful threads in there you might enjoy the reads as they have been selected because they have been identified as having usefull info on subjects that are asked fequently around here. I hope you now understand Lithus frustration and don't take it too personaly, he wrote the thread. I would recommend the 1st sticky in there with small text about RAM I personaly think it is one of the best (haha).

People take time out of their precious lives to construct these stickies and make them available for people w/o knowledge to read. Then when someone new comes around and instead of researching on their own, they ask the same question that has already been answered. Thus, these people that know stuff have to take more time out of their lives to answer the same question over and over again. That's what annoys people. -
To be fair to the OP, it would make more sense to have five separate stickies with clear titles instead of one master one. If people clearly saw the Ultimate CPU Guide as the first sticky, and the other ones, a lot more people might click. Unfortunately, the "master" sticky is somewhat deceiving, who knows what's on there. But, yes, people should spend a little time searching first. Breaking the 'master' into 5 separate is just a suggestion.
-
Chaz has it laid out fine, not being willing to click the one he has demonstrates a lack of intuitiveness that I doubt more stickys would help and just clutter for the rest of us.
-
We came up with the Uber-Sticky idea when we had too many stickies going. If each sticky was individual, the entire front page would be stickies. And I'm not going to flip to page 2 every time to answer new questions.
-
Adinu, I get it, I was lazy--I usually do search--but got a couple snide comments for it. I understand why people might get frustrated, but is it worth deriding me for? Isn't this primarily a place where folks such as myself--"someone new"--can get advice from more knowledgable folks without getting the Snark?
But I've been over that for hours--I'm just trying to figure out where I can buy the most affordable laptop possible, hint hint
By the way Lithus, your sticky post was very helpful. Thanks for putting that together. -
if you want laptop buying advice I suggest going to the "What Laptop Should I Buy?" section of the forums http://forum.notebookreview.com/forumdisplay.php?f=16
and filling in what your looking for in teh standard format (you will see what the format is if you read the stikies or look an any post) -
I've done that, Ben. I took the blurb at the top of this forum "Discuss Processors..." to mean that discussion of processors, including stupid questions, should be done here.
-
Jonnybardo, this discussion has gone beyond you. I would not sweat it. I did respond to the link you made available. You do have the right to ask any question you want. Don't be afraid in the future, ask away. If we are snarky so be it, it does not mean you can't ask. I would be more worried about people not posting than posting questions of issues!
-
Don't worry about it, jonnybardo. In the future, do refer to the stickies before posting your question, but if you ever don't know anything, feel free to ask; that's what the forums are for!
