Anyone have details on what the new Blu-Ray drives in laptops (like Dell is offering in some machines) can handle in terms of older discs? What formats can they read and what formats can they write?

Actually, the report means nothing to me. I don't really give a damn on the tech stuff as it won't help you when there is no software titles available to the format.

HD-DVD is in trouble now. their market penetration is just over 1.5 million units (including XBox 360's HD-DVD) while there are over 5 millions Blu-ray players sold in the same time frame (including PS3).

The recent Blockbuster decision to carry only Blu-ray for rental certainly didn't help.

On top of that. Sony also own Sony Pictures and MGM which means a lot of hit movies will be Blu-ray only (Casino Royale, Spiderman, etc)

Oh, I'm sure eventually, we will see a bunch of dual format machines at reasonable cost (say sub $300) but it will take a few years. In a way, it really doesn't really matter as you know that IF there is an eventual winner. By the time the dust settles, you'll be able to buy a dual format machine for $100, so your collection (whichever you decide) will never be obsolete. ;-)

I am fairly confident both formats will co-exsist.

Even if the movie market has bluray being dominant it doesnt mean that hddvd wont stick around as the primary replacment for dvds when it comes to burning computer data/movies. Thats really all I am instrested in anyways.

There are alot more sides to look at to have a clear understanding of a "fomat war" other than who makes more movies.

I personally and alot of others would prefer to burn to hddvd over bluray.

I have never and will never support HD DVD (Sorry for HD DVD fans). Since the announcement of PS3 (and of course, it was the first time I heard of BD), I have always supported BD. My current BD discs are Casino Royale (I get it free from EU PS3 registration, although I have JPN PS3), Rumour has it, and 2 games: Ridge Racer 7, and Resistance.

In UK, (in HMV music shop), about a month ago, I found one shelf full of HD DVD, with a little section on BD. Now, it's completely the opposite. There are even more BD than HD DVD was.

BD, I am so proud that I sided with you!!!

Lol it's nice to hear from someone who's an unabashed enthusiast of one format over the other. I have been noticing an increasing number of Blu-Ray related media and products in local retail stores and online, and you've just confirmed that observation.

I prefer Blu Ray over HD, primarily because of higher data capacity. I would have bought a writer, if media were easily available. Sadly HD seems to have more proponents everywhere I see.

different case for me. the gaming console I've always supported sided with blu-ray. Walt disney sided with BD, Sony sided with BD. I have no choice, am I (well, I'm very glad that I chose BD, too)? Then, of course the bigger capacity.

To sesshomaru: No, HD DVD no longer rule the UK market anymore. See my last post here. According to Wikipedia, 67% of HD format is in Blu-ray disc.

The only chance for HD-DVD is to have cheap combo player/writer. A single format HD-DVD writer will fail even on PC as a storage device since most OEM will only ship 1 player/writer unit on each PC and if Blu-ray media dominate the market, they are not going to buck the trend and put a HD-DVD writer in their PCs. This is especially true for the Laptop market as most people use their laptop as a portable media player also.

The only benefit in my opinion of having a HD drive, be it Blu-ray or HD-DVD, would be for backing up data. It is not a viable option as a HD movie player, as regardless of the screen size and resolution, laptops were never meant to be HD movie players.

I read the original thread so I feel I can comment it was a hard read and maybe this has already been stated but I can't read it all! The Betamax, VHS comparison does not work. Beta was better but lower storage, Blue-ray is top quality and more storage. It is going to go down to price, that is it! Right now HD has the lead, Blue-Ray costs like $500! That is not going to work!

I've read several reports (sorry, no links anymore) that HD-DVD is a superior technology (PiP is better implemented, and stuff like that)
however, Blu-Ray (without E :p) is more widely spread (most likely due to PS3) while HDDVD is cheaper
it all depends on whether PS3 will become a success story or not :)

I'd like to see what happens to the movie studios and see whether they alter their allegiance either way. It could be that the movie studios behind Blu-ray change and start to support HD-DVD or vice-versa. It would be more likely that they turn multi-format first rather than a straight swap but either way, without content one of the formats will die out. Since it is highly unlikely that Sony will loose their movie studios in the near future, they will nearly always have sufficient enough content with which to use. Toshiba on the other hand do not have such luck and solely depend on the big movie studios for content.

Well, Sony/MGM is Blu-ray only and Disney is HD-DVD only but other studios are releasing products in both format. is Disney start releasing in both format, it's pretty much game over for HD-DVD.

disney distributes movies that promote satanism. if u play their movies backwards you will hear mickey mouse worship the devil. this clearly means that HD-DVD is good and blu-ray (also sounds like glu-ray) is evil. if u support BD you will burn in hell. the choice is simple :D

Besides sony are evil. And so is Apple and Dell, and they support Blu-Ray.

On the other hand, MS ain't the posterchild of goodlyness (yes, I made up a word). It's just that there's more evil in the BD camp than in HD-DVD.

Apple is truly evil, in biblical terms the apple although symbolized knowledge was in reality the downfall of mankind and now according to them we are stuck in this mudball because of it! Death to the Apple! Sony are evil for over charging unsuspecting ppl for the same quality and technology everybody else provides but without the wonderous brand name. MS just plain suck! and Dell, well guilt by association i say ;)

I do agree. Why do Sony and Apple insist on charging more for their products? If they were anywhere near as good as they thought they'd have something going for them but come on, would you really pay more money for a Plasma or LCD screen just because it is Sony? I'm sure many people on this forum know who make good Plasma and LCD screens. Hint: it ain't Sony!

Now I do understand that some of their products are good, but in most cases that I have come across you pay for the brand with Sony and not for the product. In direct comparison to the likes of Panasonic, Pioneer and Phillips you get way more bang for your buck than you do with Sony screens. They really do think they are the best at everything and don't even get me started on their proprietary memory formats; I could start an entire thread on that topic alone!

I would be the first to agree that Sony products are more look than substance but in this case, The product quality doesn't really matter. (just like back in the days of Beta vs VHS). Availabilty of Contents will decide on who win and who lose.

Want to see a studio crash and burn? Keep an eye on Paramont then. Take a look at this:

    http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=8608

BD is outselling HD at almost 2:1. For a studio to offer only one format is stupid as they will be slashing their sales by 2/3. Looks here:

    http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/844

This is how things should be done as you can see Warner generating the high sales number by going with both format.

If they think that by releasing a $300 player will allow them to make up the number gap, they can dream on. HD-DVD stand alone player sales is so bad that even the Xbox 360 HD-DVD is out selling it. There is no way that a $300 stand alone player will make a decent impact on the sales number, especially with the recent PS3 price drop and a lot of heavy hitting PS3 games coming out in the next few months.

thats means nothing at this point, 3/4 of BD sales are from the PS3, and people arnt buying PS3's to watch movies on. The only people buying these hi def systems now are buying them because they are cheap or they are tech junkies.

When these become more mainstream people are still looking at price/quality, not a bunch a specs on a web page claiming that the their technology is better when it really does the same thing. Sure BD holds more but who cares if it holds the entire movie?

I have 300 for hd dvd and it had all the special features and the movie on it and it fits on one disc. BD is just wasting money if they are not fully using there product. If say it takes up 24GB out of 25GB on a HD DVD disc thats what 1 gb? so what, but thats 6GB atleast on a BD disc.

And what if BD becomes obselete? Sony is stuck with these discs it has to manufacture just for the PS3 and then costs will go up.

Makes NO sense to pay double for something that does the same thing.

only reason I would get Transformers on HD or BD is if they had extra features the normal DVD didnt.

As for michael bay saying no to TF2 cuz of the format, thats just dumb, your contribution is to the big screen, not the disc format!

thats like saying you wont make a movie cuz ppl cant use samsung dvd players to view it!

I disagree, I think BD will win out in the end because of its capacity, In the end there are a million to one sales of Blank writeable DVD's to Commerical Movie DVD's, BD Burners are just becoming mainstream and there are many more manufacturers offering Blu ray than there are offering HD-DVD in both notebooks and in desktop machines, For this reason I think BD will win out.

    Read this here:

    http://crunchgear.com/2007/06/27/in...s-talks-about-blu-ray-and-why-hd-dvd-is-dead/

Sigma produce chips for both HD-DVD and Blu-ray and if anyone can tell a trend they can. HD-DVD may have bought themselves some time with that 150mil but unless they can pull a X'mas miracle. It's game over for them (they won't die overnight but they will lose their chance of ever catching up).

I don't believe that lower standalone player price is going to save the day. It's all about contents and when people walk into varies stores and see more Blu-ray movies on the shelves (especially big titles), they will go with Blu-ray even at a higher price.

Here is a interesting site I didn't see listed in this forum yet:
    http://www.eproductwars.com/dvd/
And also: I was thinking that when a HD-DVD gets scratched, you could probably use a device like Skipdoctor to fix it, though not on a scratched blu-ray? Correct me if i'm wrong, but if it is the way I imagine it to be, then that
would mean a definite plus for hd-dvd.

I'm still going with blu-ray. Most movie industries are using blu-ray(there are companies that use HD DVD).

Sony made a smart move by teaming up with other companies to make blu-ray.

Regardless of whether €150 million changed hands, the fact that two studios have changed allegiance in HD-DVDs favour is something to shout about and something that I mentioned might happen here.

If this trend continues we might have a real dirty fight on our hands between these two formats. Whether this will be better for the consumer or not only time will tell. I sure as hell will be looking forward to what happens over the Christmas period.

Look at all the BDA (Blu-ray Disc Association) announcement at IFA. Acer joining BDA, Major China DVD manufacturer joining BDA, Sharp introducing Blu-ray player, etc ,etc. The HD-DVD camp better have something major up their sleeves for their presentation tomorrow or they can kiss it goodbye with or without paramount.

Do ya think WW3 will be the battle of the disc formats? will the world be ravaged by mayhem and confusion over which format to buy? will Bush decide to nuke china for supporting blu-ray? will osama back hd-dvd and the format be deemed a WMD?

seriously this discussion will go on forever ;)
