The speed on an HD (the only one Dell is offering) on the Inspiron I'm looking @ is 320GB @ 5400 RPM; is there a big difference between this and the 7200 and how ddoes htis affect battery life?

Which Dell? Is the 320GB in one HDD or two? There is a new 320GB 5400rpm Toshiba HDD which should have good performance. 160GB 5400rpm will have lower transfer rates.

You can get an idea of relative performance and power consumption from the Tom's Hardware 2.5" HDD charts.

The speed determines how fast your files can be gotten from your HDD. Which would lead to a faster load time, and getting files faster, but the lower the speed the HDD is spinning the more battery life you get.
