I just ran the HDtune on my Seagate Momentus 5400.3 ST9120822AS 120GB 5400 RPM hard drive, but the thing is, i really do not know how to read it, to me, it looks like something could be wrong because of the downward spike, but im not to sure. How does this look to you? after that first run, i went in to the device manager-disk drives-policies tab-enable enhanced performance then did the run again just to see if it made a difference, dont know if it did, but the downward spikes are not there. Also, i did a full error scan on the hd, and came back with a couple of red blocks, what should i do, if anything?

    thanks.

Second run seems to be OK but your Temperature looks a bit high(52 deg C), I can not comment on the error sectors because I don't know about it.

That seems awfully low... And you're reporting a couple bad sectors.

If it were my drive, I'd already be backing it up and ordering a replacement. :(

CPU usage in both runs is too high... try correcting drive sector errors and defrag your hard drive using a defrag program.. I recommend Smartdefrag... i'm attaching a pic of how well my drive does when defragged and all...

Performance is quite normal for a Seagate 5400.3. That's an old hard drive.

It's slow and has bad sectors. Good time for an upgrade. Let me know if you need suggestions.

PS. the font you used was hard to read, I've edited it to a normal font.

    HPDV6700,

Go to my Computer, right click on each drive you have listed and select properties. Select the Tools tab and click the Check Now button under the Error-checking option. Make sure both boxes are checked and say yes to allowing it to do a check when rebooting.

With all drives selected like this, reboot your computer, making sure it's plugged in and go watch a movie (this will take a long time).

When you return and find the computer at the desktop again, Windows will have marked those sectors as 'bad' and will have replaced them by the pool of 'extra' sectors each drive has set up for this exact purpose. If you run HD Tune again, it will show those bad sectors again - don't worry, the process you followed above will have fixed them as far as Windows is concerned.

In HD Tune, if you run the benchmark again - they should not show those extreme dips (I'm guessing this is where the bad sectors were to begin with), but even if they do, this is as good as this drive will get.

Maybe it is time for a new HD? Either way, I would still run the process I outlined above to ensure that when you're cloning or copying your data (or, even just using the computer normally; if you intend to just continue with this drive) that the bad sectors will not cause your O/S to fail catastrophically or corrupt your data beyond recovery.

    Hope this helps.

    Good luck.

That did help, thanks, and this is what i am going to do, use th HD, intill it gives me problems, then replace it. Everything else seems to check out, it does not seem to be a real bottleneck as i only have a Core Solo.. Also, i have never got a blue screen, or anything of the like, and it still seems to preform just fine. When i bought it, i did not realize it was already a couple of years old...

That is a perfect strategy. As long as you are backing up your important data on a regular schedule off that drive, I too would be continuing to use it until I needed to upgrade.

    Glad that I could help.

    Cheers!

I was looking at the HDTUNE under the health tab, and i see this, anything to worry about? The Reallocated Sector Count is at 100, and was yellow. I just ran the Error scan again, after running the Vista Error Checking for the C drive With Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors selected. and nothing changed. The bad sectors are in the same spots.. but not getting worse. But could these 4 bad sectors be causing my random hard freezes once in a blue moon... (only happened 3 times total..)

    Thanks!! :D

    Hmmm...

Did these random hard freezes happen after you ran the offline disk check? If they did, then it may mean an O/S re-install is in order, but if they occurred before you marked the sectors bad, then I wouldn't worry about it.

As for the number of sector relocated, as long as the Smart Status shows 'OK', again I wouldn't worry about it, yet. :)

    Cheers!

You know, i really cant remember. I think they have always happened, even with Windows XP PRO on the 40GB HD. I kinda remember doing that once or twice hard shutting it down..

Maybe its just Chrome. I must have the beta, because i have the extensions. Google Chrome 4.0.249.64 (35722) beta Everytime it has done this, it was with google chrome with a few tabs open. But its not maxing out the CPU, must be some kind of glitch or something...
