    Hi,
I am thinkng to upgrade my HP DV 9830us notebook by adding a second HD in the empty slot 2. I contacted the HP Customer Service to ask the maximum supported size, but they did not seem to be reliable (the guy at the beginning told me the max size was 120 Gb when the original HD was alredy 320 Gb!!). So I was wondering if anyone has tried to update this laptop with a disk bigger than 320 Gb. I was thinking to by a 500 Gb HD.

    Thanks,

    Mario

    Welcome to NBR,

You should have no problem installing two 500gb harddrives in your laptop. HP reps are not the best people for tech support. They do not even know their products.

One thing you should do is this:
Turn the system off and look at the harddrive slot.
HP is known for not providing secondary harddrive caddies. So you may need to buy a harddrive caddy in order to get another harddrive connected to your system.

    Hi K-TRON,

Thanks for your reply and welcoming to NBR.
I did check the HD slot #2 and there is no harddrive caddy.
Where do you think I can buy one?

Also, do you think I can keep the original 350 Gb HD in slot#1 and add the 500 GB in slot # 2. (I am not intentioned to run them in raid mode).

    Thanks again,

    Mario

I can just imagine how powerful your video performance would be if you will add another HD in that slot. Good luck with your upgrade.

K-TRON, thank you very much for the info you provided. As you said, people form the HP customer service barely know their products. I bought the caddy on the e-bay seller you suggested me and a 500 GB HD from zipzoomfly.com. I mounted it and now my laptop has an extra storage capability.

Hi everyone. I'm planning to do the same as Marius_650 in this thread. I have this same model, and want to buy a 7200 RPM disk to improve performance.

What I want to know is if it's difficult to change a hard disk in my laptop, and if I can use a hard disk in this rpm without damaging my laptop. Is it going to overheat? Should I buy additional coolers and fans (like those ones with aluminium placed behind the laptop)?

My plan is: change the original 320gb 5400rpm with a 500gb 7200 rpm: the 500gb is going to be the primary disc. Is it possible to do a Vista Clean install so I can delete all this HP bloatware and use my OEM license?

What should I do and read (like official pdf documentation and such)? I didn't buy this laptop in us myself, I have a cousin that brought it to me in Brazil.

    Thanks in Advance!

Hope you haven't bought that yet? See the Hitachi 7K500 thread - higher performance than the Seagate and now on for $80.

If the Intel 80GB G2 SSD was available (out of stock when I just checked), that is also a very good deal - as long as you don't plan to fill it to much, it will give you the ultimate performance right now.

That one is, yes. You want the 7K500 Travelstar, which Amazon doesn't have yet.

tilleroftheearth, I've changed my hd with the Hitachi. A friend of mine bought it in amazon. The only drawback is that hp did't provide me with a second hd caddy.

    Anyways, thanks for the suggestion!

Yes, yes, the HP does NOT provide a caddy for the second bay so you need to purchase this with your new HD. I wish seller would include that reminder when you go to purchase a new HD.

Incidentally, I recently purchased two 500GB Hitachi Travelstar HD and will keep anyone interested aware of how well they're preforming in the near future. I hope you will do the same.
