    Hi guys/girls,

I'm about to upgrade my laptop HD ( details in sign )....

    Whats the best option? A 7200 rpm HD ( about 100GB ) or a bigger 5400 rpm HD ( About 160GB)?

Im running XP Pro, but I'll install Vista soon...

When I upgraded my old Acer from a 4200rpm to a 5400rpm HD the performance boost was noticeable.... any chance of happen again?

    Thx

Ps: Sorry about my english... xD

7200RPM drives spin 25% faster than a 5400RPM drive, so theoritically you should notice the differnce in performance. If you are not going to need the extra space, than the added performance gain will deffinantly be worth it, as the HDD is a bottleneck to performance.

Due the high density of the 160gb 5,400rpm HDD performance should be roughly the same as a 100gb 7,200rpm HDD.

The 160GB 5400RPM drive is a bit slower than the 100GB 7200RPM but for most uses the difference is unnoticeable.

Thank you all for your replies...

I am in a low budget... so i'll spend about $100 in the HD plus another $100 in 1GB memory sticks...

What about Seagate momentus 7200.1... is it a good HD?

Note that i'm not concerned about battery autonomy as the notebook is a kind of desktop replacement...

All Seagates are good in general, google the specific drive model number and check out reviews if there are any.

I have one in my R4000, it was a speedy drive but a wee bit warmer than the 5400.2 it replaced (which is to be expected).
