Hi, I have a brand new T61. When I plug my External HD into the bottom of the right USB ports, it reads it. However, when I plug it into any of the other two, it says the device has malfunctioned, and it is recognized as an Unkown device.

But I have a flash drive that works perfectly on all 3.

What gives? Is this some kind of power issue? Broken USB? Uninstall the USB ports and reinstall? (If so, please direct me. I see 7 USB root hubs in Device Manager, and only 3 on my laptop)

Is your external hard-disk powered from the USB port? If so, I'd be pretty certain only one of your USB ports provides enough power...

No, I have the drive plugged into the wall, but I'm guessing this could still be the case. If the wall isn't providing enough power.

The USB port might be configured to detect a particular device, once you have installed the drivers. I have the same issue with my Sony webcam, but it's not big deal.
