Replacing a notebook HD is a fairly simple process. As posted above, Seagate and Hitachi make the best HDs. Also, get either a 5400rpm or 7200rpm HD. Avoid 4200rpm HDs.

For more information, refer to this excellent guide.

What is wrong with the Samsung HDDs? Performance may be slightly behind Hitachi and Seagate, but they are quiet, a bit cooler and a bit less expensive. I have been very happy with a 160GB Samsung which I installed to replace a 120GB Seagate.

I don't think there is anything wrong with Samsung. All the manufacturers have their advantages. For example, Seagate and Hitachi are performers, whereas Samsung and Fujitsu are quieter drives, that are a little low on the performance front.
