There are two options right now for the studio xps 16 at dell's website. You can go with the older Core 2 Duo's or pay a little more for an i5 starting with the 420m. If I'm mainly considering the laptop for gaming, would the 4670 limit the performance, or would the i5 add more performance?

Depends on the game. Generally, the GPU will be the limiting factor in gaming though.

I would think that the i5 will be better than a C2D of the same clockrate, certainly, and the 4 threads in the i5-5xx series would help with games that are core hungry.

A good reason to get an i5 if it isn't too expensive is that it will be futureproof.

Well I'd get the i5 or the i7(depending on the region one or the other will be cheaper) if given the choice unless of course there was a stellar deal on a Core 2 machine.

Nonetheless, you might see an increase in performance but as Shadow said, in general, your GPU will be the limiting factor i.e. by rule of thumb it's the GPU's fault if a game doesn't play normally.

on ati gpu you get a boost from more powerfull gpu so a 4670 runing on a i5 will produce more fps then the same card with a C2D

but be sure that the gpu wil be the first bottleneck you will encounter in games

Thanks for all of the great responses! I ordered the i5 430m with the 4670 last night. The only downer about the order is that it doesn't look like it will ship until February.

On a side note, Dell's configurations can get really deceiving and it almost killed the deal for me. If I configure and upgrade a C2Duo with specs that are close to the i5 configuration, it actually ends up being more expensive. What kind of crap is that? You really have to be careful on their website or you'll end up paying too much, and I'm sure they have designed it that way.

Your first mistake is assuming prices have to be logical ;)

Nonetheless congratulations on your new machine :D

if u want to game , the studio XPS 16 is just good... if u really want a better gaming laptop, i recommend ASUS G51J or ASUS G73... they should have no problems with games but it all depends on ur budget... could u plz give more info on the laptop etc like price and full specs?
