the bjkt has a free fall sensor as opposed to bekt that does not.
Free fall sensor is basically an acceleration sensor that parks the heads of the hd when it feels it moves too quickly.
your lappy has to support this feature (and it does in your case), otherwise both are identical.

I do not think your laptop needs to support the FFS for it to work.

Phil is right, the FFS is not laptop dependent.

For only like $3 difference, go with the WD3200BJKT.

There are machines that have the accelerometer embedded in the motherboard, and that stuff works for any HDD.

The WD BJKT has the accelerometer inside the drive, with stuff coded into the drive firmware and the ATA controller controls the functioning/working of the feature. So, it'll work in any notebook.

Don't bother, you will not find any anyways.

The thing that can do this when falling is an accelerometer as said, and it's built in to the HDD, otherwise there wouldn't be 2 versions of the same disc.

Okay, so the only difference is the free fall sensor? Because I've already got a BEKT and I wanted to run a software RAID-0 with 640 MB, and I know some people say it's better to use two identical models for that. The presence of the free fall sensor doesn't affect the read head's read time or any other performance known, right? Should I stomach the extra $3.00 and go for it?

    Hi all,

Was thinking of upgrading my 320GB 5400rpm HDDs to 7200s, when I noticed that they mostly come in sata-300 interface. where as my XPS came with sata-150 drives and I believe sata-150 controler (not quite sure).

So my question is, will it support those new WD scorpio HDDs?

Any advice in the HDD upgrade area is apprectiated.

    Thanks.

Your XPS has a SATA-300 controller.

    Andy,

Is there a way I can confirm this? I went through the BIOS screen and Windows' Device Manager but couldn't find any info on that.

What's worrying me a bit is that mine is an older system its over a year old, so maybe newer systems come with sata-300 controlers.

Also when I enter my service tag on the dell website it brings up a list of recommended parts apgrades and all the HDDs there are sata-150. I ofcourse contacted Tech. Sup. and one guy says its supported the another guy says its not, which is the ussual level of support you get from dell.

I know now, from browsing forums, that even if its 150 I can install and run the 300 but wouldn't be making use of the added speed.

Anyway, is there a way I can confirm what controller I have?

    Thanx.

Even if it doesn't, it doesn't matter.

SATA-150 and SATA-300 are compatible and there is no traditional 2.5" hard drive that is limited by SATA 150.

The XPS M1730 is based on the Santa Rosa platform, so it has the ICH8M-E controller - which is SATA-300 compliant.

Anyway, SATA-150/300 doesn't matter when buying HDDs. It won't affect performance in anyway.

So if I wanted to run a RAID-0, should I stick with another BEKT or BJKT?

BJKT imho. though the added value that you get from it is not that high.
