I've run defraggler a couple of times but fragmentation doesn't seem to go below 41%.

Is this because I'm using my system while defraggler runs or something else?

I've tried Windows defrag too but that didn't do better.

Maybe too much of the HDD is used up? Defragging is more effective the more free space you got.

Maybe there are some system files like hibernation cache or pagefiling that can't be moved?

    I've got 16GB free from 30GB total.
I do use hibernation and page file yes.
I'm not really keen on installing more software. Several sources have said that defraggler is very good.
Is smart defrag really going to do better?

Edit: oh well I'll try it.

You cannot defragment files that are ready-only. You may have a lot of them. I don't know how big is your pagefile but that could have an important role also. I always clear the pagefile on exit. It's not exactly safe but it speeds up boot and shutdown times.

I actually really recommend using MyDefrag (another install.....). It is the newest iteration of JKDefrag and with the Slow Optimize script bundled with the install, I've found that it defrags much more thoroughly than any other defraggers that I've used before.

I'm putting Smart Defrag to the test now. Will test the other one if this doesn't satisfy.

I'm trying Smart Defrag also. It says 5.77% fragmented (149Gb) and it needs about 40 minutes to finish. Nevermind 40 minutes just went down to 20. Time is not set correctly.

Oh it's got an option: stop defrag while using battery and it's checked by default. Don't run defrag on battery.

Little more info might help. What Operating System(OS).

Twiz57 is right about the read-only files not able to move. But they can with a professional program like diskkeeper and perfect disk. But they cost money. They have a feature to defrag on boot up. Therefore the file is not in use. I do like the defrag in TuneUp Utilities, again a cost, but you get many more features with it and it is the best tweak program the market imo.

You can also remove you pagefile and restore points, reboot and defrag. That is the cheap way through this. No cost at all

    Best Wishes

I never said that you should remove the pagefile entirely, no matter how much RAM you have installed. It's not a good idea. The lil' program that TinderboxUK recommended is actually pretty fast... it defraged the 5.77% to 0.15% in like 9 minutes, even tho it said it was estimated 40 minutes to complete the process. And remove the restore and backup points ... no way unless a virus got into them and you think they're no good. The default Windows XP defrag does not even want to run for some reason... so I find the Smart Defrag very useful. Thank you!

I have MyDefrag optimizing my Hd everynight, and according to Windows, it's 1% fragmented.

I use Auslogics disk defrag, it sems to be much more effective and faster than any other defrsgging program I have seen out there, miles ahead of the windows defragging program. It normally only takes me about two minutes to defrag, the windows one took over an hour

Using the system while defragging may cause this. If you're currently using files, then they wouldn't be able to be moved.

Try defragging over night while you sleep.

Smart Defrag says my C: drive is 18.4% fragmented, while Defraggler says 43%. Windows say total fragmentation 43%, File fragmentation 21%.

    Win XP SP3.

    Sounds good. I'll try that.

Tested it. Before defragmentation 52%, after 52%.

Even after running Perfect Disk at boot up, Windows says my C drive is 21% fragmented and files are 51% fragmented.

This is what Windows defrag says:

    File fragmentation
    Total files = 49.760
Average file size = 167 KB
    Total fragmented files = 612
    Total excess fragments = 1.865
Average fragments per file = 1,03

    Pagefile fragmentation
    Pagefile size = 0 bytes
    Total fragments = 0

    Folder fragmentation
    Total folders = 4.917
    Fragmented folders = 1
    Excess folder fragments = 0

That's weird. Do you have more that one partition on your harddrive? One partition that's not used or rarely used?

I have one more partition: D:. I use it for file storage.

I think my most fragmented file is some kind of left over from I/O meter :) IOBW.TST I will delete it.

Did you use the smart placement option when you ran PerfectDisk?

I usually have no problems at all using Perfectdisk no matter how bad the file fragmentation. If you have time you can also turn on the consolidate free space option.

After four runs of Defraggler I had the fragmented files down to 100. Which was the best for a while now.

Now I ran PerfectDisk SmartPlacement and the number fragmented files went up too 600.

What is better: limit the fragmented files or use SmartPlacement?

Phil, get a copy of Disc Keeper 09 professional, it is amazing.
I was able to defrag stuff on my drives, the standard defrag utility couldnt.
Also it gives you the ability to defrag startup, MFT, and other sectors a normal utility cannot
