    Hey everyone,

Sorry, I don't know much about hard drives or anything, and even less about enclosures.

I'm about to order one of each from newegg.ca as I need to replace my XPS' hard drive and transfer the old one's files.

Can someone quickly recommend me a HDD and Enclosure for a total of around $75 or less (or $80 or whatever...). If you could post a link to the products on newegg.ca that would be even better. It doesn't need to be a big HDD or anything... 250+ should be fine.

Just didn't want to order the parts and have them not be compatible or something. And I have absolutely no idea what to look for in an enclosure.

    Thanks

EDIT: I will be using this to transfer files to a mac... don't know if there's HDD/enclosure that aren't mac compatible or something but just thought I'd make sure!

You do the searching, but Vantec USB 2/3 enclosure and WD Scorpio Blue 500GB HDD.

    Good luck.

Thanks. The WD Scorpio Blue is a bit more than I'm willing to spend... is the Seagate Momentus or something like that a decent choice?

Yes, the Seagate's are cheaper, but not a decent choice in my opinion.

(The Scorpio Blue 500GB @ 5400 RPM's are faster than the Seagate 7200.4's @ 7200 RPM's, for example - in real world usage, overall).

What about Scorpio Black? 250GB Scorpio Blue is $85 which is too much for me...

    320GB 7200 Scorpio Black is $55
    320GB 7200 Seagate Momentus is $55

That's around the price point I'm looking at, which is the better option?

And as far as enclosures.. the two highest rated Vantec under $25 are:

Vantec NexStar SX 2.5" IDE to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure (Onyx Black) - Model NST-285U2-BK which is $20

    and

Vantec NexStar 3 2.5" IDE to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure (Brilliant Red) - Model NST-260U2-RD which is $24

Lol... I didn't even know the Scorpio Black's were even in the same race (price-wise)...

Yeah, same recommendation over the Seagates then...

As for the enclosures - make sure you are looking at SATA to USB2.0 enclosures - not IDE...

Okay guess I'll get a Scorpio Black then!

Good thing I asked for help otherwise I would have ende dup with an IDE :( Thanks for all your help I appreciate it. Now just the enclosure... Which of these two or is there really a difference?

    Vantec NexStar CX 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive/SSD Enclosure (Supports 7mm, 9.5mm, 12.5mm HDD/SSD) - Model NST-200S2-BK which is $14

    or

Vantec NexStar TX 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive/SSD Enclosure - Model NST-210S2-BK which is $12

    Last question I promise!

With both of those being aluminum enclosures (keeps the drives as cool as possible), either would be a good choice.

For myself, I might lean towards the slightly more expensive model to be able to use 12.5mm thick drives in the future (if/when they hit 2TB in the 2.5" form factor).

Glad to have helped - and, good luck.
