XPS 1530, 250 GB 7200RPM Hdd. Last night the system locked up suddenly and after a restart (had to do a power button hold shutdown) i was unable to log back into windows, I would get to the fingerswipe or password screen but couldn';t get any further. Restarted a couple times and eventually the problem grew to not getting past the scrolling bars screen. Gave up and decided to come back to it this morning. After running a test I get this message, so I try reformatting the HDD and starting over (system is >2 weeks old so not a BIG deal). I had no internet access so I couldn't seek out a solution online and nothing else was working.

Well that works for the afternoon and I am able to reinstall games and drivers no problem. After getting all that done I restart the system to apply drivers and other changes that needed a restart to take effect. Upon bootup I am told that no hard drive is being recognized. After some restarts I am able to get it to boot up, but now I have a message in the corner that says hard drive failure may happen soon, and I am unable to install itunes, MSN messanger, or firefox, although AIM worked. Not sure where to go from here. There is obviously something wrong and I am suspecting a HDD replacement is in the making here.

If you are getting a SMART warning about predicted drive failure then your hard drive is going to die, and possibly fast. You should send it back to Dell for a new HDD under warranty. I'm pretty sure that you aren't looking to buy a new hard drive anyway seeing that you probably invested some $$ on that 250GB 7200RPM drive that came with your system. So, send your laptop back for a new hard drive. Kinda sucks that your disk died after 2 weeks, but at least your laptop isn't going to the service center for a second time like mine is...

The reason I posed is b/c it failed once but is now working. Just wondering what could have caused this or if there is another solution. Was planning a Dell call but just looking for some more info on the problem.

If it failed once then it may be on its last legs. You shouldn't depend on a flaky, intermittent hard drive for anything, especially if it convinces you that it is working and you load it up with important unrecoverable data and then the drive craps out for good. Murphy's Law.

Don't trust a HDD once it's failed. Get a replacement.
You could however run a diagnostic on it such as HD Tune to see if it detects damage on the drive.

Alright. Trying HD Tune to see if I can learn anything new.
