I would like to upgrade the HDD in my laptop. I fear that the disks (Win XP, etc..) that came with the laptop will no longer work. Is this true? I know alot of you have upgraded, and any advice would be great?

XP should work fine. You just have to re-install the Operating System and other software from the discs that HP gave you when you got your notebook. I'll recommend the Hitachi 7k60, the best notebook hard drives. They come in 40 and 60GB varieties. They are in short supply at the moment. They run about $150 for the 40GB on Pricgrabber.com for the places that have them in stock, $190 for the 60GB version. They are supposed to be coming out with the new 7k100 sometime this summer. It will come in 60, 80 and 100GB flavors with IDE and SATA. You can throw your old hard drive in an external case for extra storage or sell on eBay to offset the cost of the new one. Good Luck.

I ordered the 7k60 Hitachi from new egg for 163.00 as well as an external case for my current drive. Can you recommend good back up software.

Data backup or hard drive backup? For backing up data onto a disc, I use Nero and a +RW disc. I also have an external drive that I keep all my stuff on as well. Plus I have all of it on my desktop. You can probably get an OEM copy of Nero on eBay for less than $10, no free support though. If you want to go the free route, CDBurnerXP works well for basic tasks like making audio and data CDs, and data DVDs. There are a few things that that it is not as good as Nero at like converting .mp3s on the fly. It does not do .wma at all. It works, just a little slower. For backing up the hard drive, I use Acronis True Image. I make a backup of the hard drive right after the install then I can restore it to the original state at anytime. By the way, you're going to love your Hitachi. You'll see a considerable performance increase. Good Luck.

I'm looking for something that will allow me to copy evrerything on my Hard drive to another, so if I ever have a major crash I'll simply be able to restore from the back up.

The easier the better? I'm tired of downloading driver after driver and losing game saves etc....

I will admit, most crashes are operator error, as I try to learn more, I tend to screw things up.
