That is an insane temperature if the program is reading it right (I doubt it). Laptop hard drives are not rated for more than 55*C. My laptop has bad hard drive cooling, and even with a 7200RPM drive I never saw it top 58*C.

What laptop do you have? I recommend trying another program if possible.

ya my hdd is rated for 60*C and stays under 53*C. As chaz said try another program and what is the model of the hdd and notebook.

Hmm..I don't pay attention too much about HDD temp on Linux, but Ubuntu 7.10 drains my laptop battery faster than that under Windows XP.
I use old laptop, Compaq nc6000 with 9cell battery. It can last up to 4hours under Windows XP (half brightness and Wifi always on), but only 2 hours while on newly released Ubuntu.

It is probable that CPU throttling is not working on your laptop, which would explain your shorter battery life under Linux and perhaps the higher HDD temperatures (if the CPU is located nearby the HDD).

    not cpu throttling problem.

possibly the ubuntu/HD load problem mentioned elsewhere on the forum.

thats what i thought. its mad! i dont think the program is reading it right. at least not for the HDD. the cpu temp is correct...because what i can feel coming out of the exhaust truly does feel like 60c.

im using Linux mint on an IBM X31. so it SHOULDN'T run that hot at all...its an ultra portable

thats what i think too. under xp the temps were in late 20's early 30's which was great. i love the way linux feels and how quick it all is...but this is starting to piss me off a little. battery hardly lasts and its BLOODY hot!!

the notebook was rarely used..and battery was stored...so its practically brand new. so theoretically it SHOULD last its projected time. but under linux it barely lasts. granted it does charge quick...

    hmm....oh. sorry about replying late...
    kinda confused now

Intel did release a powerpack package for Linux which, according to users, improved battery life dramatically. I don't have an Intel CPU, but root around the repos for "intel powerpack" or other terms such as "CPU" or "throttling" or "frequency".

As for your HDD, I can't say what is causing that problem. But if your HDD light isn't constantly on, it is possible that the CPU is running at 1.7GHz all the time and thus heating up surrounding components.

hmm...this powerpack is proving kinda difficult to find...its there for mandriva..
but i cant particularly find it for mint.

the temps are getting kinda unbearable now...i cant even put the notebook on my lap!

Yes for some reason when I run any distro on my notebook it always runs real hot and since the notebook that I usually use it on is about 2 years old now and I really can't be bothered buying a new battery I have to use it on AC which again increases the temperature :(

TELL ME about it! ok...ive been scouring around and ive been testing a couple of APPS. im using one called KPOWERSAVE. so far it seems to have kinda worked...fan hasn't kicked in and so CPU throttling seems to be working....although still too hot even on idle.

apparently though..this one is even better..its called POWERNOWD. gonna try it soon to see how it works.

Sounds cool. I might give it a try. How's battery life?

From what I remember about Ubuntu's repos, there were different packages for different CPUs. Read around about it and do some Google searching; while Linux is hard to get going, the good thing is that lots of people have encountered the same problems.
