I ordered a 500gb external, 7200rpm with 16mb cache. I have noticed that most of the other drives had 8mb. With all other factors aside, how much of a performance increase would you expect from having a 16mb cache over an 8mb?

better transfer rates, less cpu usage and shorter access time. The difference from traditional 2 meg to 8 meg is about 35 percent,do that math..def. worth it to get a 16MB..and the difference in price isn't really that much. go to www.newegg.com to check em out.

What is the model number ?
If it's USB, the USB interface is a bottleneck for the HDD performance, but the cache will help in some cases like when you are working with fragmented files or files scattered on the HDD AFAIK. -
