If I buy one off ebay, will it work on any laptop?

If not, anyone know which one to use for a Toshiba L850?

Think the fact it's on the left hand side might be a problem?

I'm assuming you can't find one specifically for your laptop?

As long as its SATA, it should work on any laptop, the only things to be aware of are the thickness (there are 9.5mm and 12.5mm models) and the fact that you'll need to remove or better yet replace the front panel (it should be possible to just take it off your DVD drive and install it on the ODD caddy, but that may not be the case with all caddies - gotta look carefully)...

Yes and no. Optical drive form factors have not changed in the last 10 years. Case in point: I had to replace the ODD in my old Inspiron 5100 last year. I was able to buy one from a discount place near my house. There are only two things you have to consider when looking for a ODD-HDD caddy. First, what is the connector on the back of the ODD: IDE or SATA (slimline SATA)? Second, is your ODD a tray load or a slot load. Optical drives will all fit into the same slot, which is a 12.7mm Optical bay. It's the rear connector port and the front bezel interface you need to check on. In looking at the replacement guide ( Toshiba Satellite Pro C850 / L850 ODD Replacement) for your Toshiba L850, it uses a tray-loading Optical drive with a slimline SATA interface. Here is the website where I got my ODD-HDD caddy from. This model is for the the Toshiba L775, but it looks to work for your model as well. But you should email them just to confirm. 2nd HDD /SSD Caddy, Toshiba L730, L735, L750, L755, L770, L775 [OBHD-SATA12-SATA-BU] - $44.75 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks
