Does anyone know if there is a way to convert the optical drive bay into a HDD storage?

Yeah, buy a 5.25" to 3.5" converter box.

My brain is stuck in desktop land. I second what Vespoli said ^^

If it's a desktop, go with my suggestion above. If it's a laptop, then you have to check the model and make of the laptop. Only a few laptops support a "hot swappable" optical bay (what Asus calls it), and they're usually found in business notebooks, such as the Asus V1 or the Thinkpad T60.

You just need a HD caddy.
All HP businness laptops that accept multibay I drives can have the optical replaced by a HDD.

Woops. I can't believe I forgot to mention the laptop model. It's a Dell Inspiron 700m. Thanks.
