So the HDD I was originally going to get from NCIX was cancelled. So now I'm going to get something else, I was hoping for something with good capacity and speed, though likely most important, power draw since I don't want to lose too much battery. Here's the page to choose from: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?minorcatid=1044. I currently have a 250GB 4200RPM Fujitsu 2.5" drive. I'll probably be able to talk them into a discount or fast shipping due to the trouble this has caused.

(SATA HDD?) The price for the 7K200 seems to be quite high, because I remember one user buying it for $89.99.
I would advise you to go for the WD3200BEVT. It is not the best HDD in terms of power consumption and battery life, but it is superior in performance as compared to the other 320GB 5400RPM HDDs and is on par with most 200GB 7200RPM HDDs, and is pretty quiet too.
The Seagate 320GB 5400.5 and the 320GB 7200.3 are pretty good as well in terms of power consumption, with an Idle|Standby Avg|R/W Avg of (0.685|0.205|1.6)W and (0.75|0.21|2.1)W respectively,
v/s the WD3200BEVT's (0.85|0.25|2.50)W
But I would still favor the WD3200BEVT.. -
How about transfer speeds? Min/Avg/Max.

These were the HD Tune results for my HDD ( WD3200BEVT PC Mark). And I know it is a bit higher than John Ratsey's Fujitsu 320GB 5400RPM
.
5400.5, 7200.3 -
I've heard that the WD vibrates a lot and is quite noisy (clicking). That's why I'm reluctant to choose it; unless I'm mistaken.
-
Scary
. I bought this drive really cheap without a warranty, haven't had any problems with it yet (*tuchwud* been 2 months). I am not sure, as some may have had this clicking problem, but I have heard vibration problems only on the 7K320. Anyway the 5400.5 is a good buy as well, or a 7K200 (if you can find the deal of $89.99)

I think that 7K200 was a 250GB 5400 RPM model since I believe that's what a forum search showed. I maybe shouldn't have said clicking as in dying but rather it's noisy when searching, etc. I'll check around for the WD a bit more to see if people have had problems with it, otherwise that's what I'll get. Post back if you have any other info.

I didn't get it, 7K200 - 250GB 5400RPM ?
Check out this thread. The OP mentions the $92 Hitachi 7K200 (200GB 7200RPM).... -
Looks like I was thinking of a different one. Anyways, I'd rather take a step up in space than down. Plus it seems power consumption is slightly better. Hopefully the vibration/clicking isn't there/isn't bad on these latest ones.

I am pretty sure there aren't any vibration/clicking problems in relation to the drive. (At least, I've never come across any info regarding this) ( 7K200)
Good Luck with the purchase.... -
I was talking about the WD. People seem to make a fair number of notes that it's noisy. Just check it out on newegg.

Yeah, I remember this being mentioned in another thread earlier. I disagree with that.
I have the AAM setting at max - 254, and a very thin, plastiky laptop, and I barely hear the HDD when idle or seeking. There was a huge improvement in noise reduction as compared to my old 7K100. -
Good to know, I'll get back to them tonight so hopefully it'll get ordered tomorrow. Maybe I'll even get a discount or Purolator shipping (1-2 days shipping time every time I've used them, still waiting on UPS, tomorrow will be 1 week. I should've just spent $3 more for Purolator...)

But the clicking only happens under ceratin cirumstances, and as far as I know it is possible to prevent it from happening.
Without the clicking the 3200BEVT is actually a very quiet drive as shown in several reviews -
(Don't mean to hijack the thread)
But clicking, is it something to worry about -- like is it the damaging clicking or the non-damaging clicking (heads parking and stuff)..??
I really haven't notice anything as of yet, but I don't have a warranty on it, so I am a bit worried..
(Do you know of any review or thread, that mentions this?) -
It is related to the head parking I believe, but I'm not sure if it is damaging if it happens too often.
If you're not hearing it I won't worry about it. If you do hear it there are certain ways to prevent it. Like the AAM setting I believe.
By the way, the clicking happens to other brands too. We've had a Samsung thread and the Seagate 5400.3 thread in the News & Reviews forum talks about it too. -
OK, I'll check that out. Thanks for the info.
HDD got cancelled, help me pick new one
