I have an Asus G50V notebook. The hdd is making some crazy sounds. I have an ESATA external thermaltake drive enclosure. Can I install windows on that and run it for my HDD on my notebook?
Would I notice any slow down in speed or would it be quicker then what is already in the notebook?

Depends on your BIOS if it lets you boot from the eSATA connection.
Why, may I ask, do you not just buy a new HD for your notebook and re-install Windows and your apps/data on that? -
I doubt it would be faster. If the ESATA enclosure has a 2.5" drive just use that in the G50, but I'll assume it's 3.5"
If the bios wont let you boot from esata, try usb. The enclosure can probably hook up thru usb or esata.
I've got a g50vt-x5 and my hard drive makes some crazy noises as well. Is yours a refurb by any chance?\
Worst case scenario get a WD scorpio blue for 45 bucks. I'd hate to have my laptop running off an external hard drive, especially if it needs a power outlet! -
It was new, but it's been dropped a few times.

If you're saying your notebook was dropped (especially if when it was running), then you need a new HD ASAP!
The connection method (eSATA) won't make it any faster - the make/model/RPM and year of the HD is what will make it faster than what you have.
I would recommend the Hitachi 7K500 for you - newest/latest tech and the most inexpensive 'new' HD I've seen in years (about $100 for 500GB right now).
Good luck. -
Hitachi 7K500... best option and going for $80 on newmegg now... go and get it...
HDD is dying. Can I boot from ESATA HDD?
