I had connected a Hitachi 5K250-160 HDD via a SATA-> USB adapter, I disconnected the USB cable from the computer and later tried connecting it again to my laptop but the HDD would not power up.

Does that mean simply because I unplugged the HDD without the 'Safely Remove Hardware" icon the HDD is now trashed??

Unplugging an HDD without "safely removing" it does not do any physical damage to your drive. You may experience some data corruption, but nothing disastrous. If your hard drive actually doesn't power up, it's because you fried it in some other way - maybe with static, etc.

That's weird because the disk was sitting flat on my desk surface, suddenly it won't power up. I had some movies and data on it, ohh well, I'm starting to lose faith on the Hitachi's I also bought a 5K320 with the hope of a silent HDD but it's noisier than the WD 80GB my stock T61 came with.

Try a different enclosure or plug it into a desktop.

I'm not sure if my desktop computer have a SATA power connector, I suppse the cable for data is the same so I'll check it out. Thing is I dont want to use the same connectors.

get a windows home server, plug some disks in, and never worry about data loss again? (a nas can do it, too.. but the additional features of a whs are great.. i love the automatic backup of it..)
