I currently upgraded my Dell XPS M1530 with the new Seagate Momentus XT 500GB HDD.
Last week I discovered an old Dell Inspiron 8600... so I decided that I would replace the old HDD (Hitachi DK23FB-60) with the HDD (Samsung HM320JI) that came out of my Dell XPS M1530.
As I was installing it, I discovered a problem... THE PINS ARE DIFFERENT!
In conclusion, my question, is there a way to get this HDD (Samsung HM320JI) to fit into the Dell Inspiron 8600, or do I need to purchase a new HDD?

Your old machine has an old EIDE connector and you must have bought an SATA hdd, the Seagate Momentus XT 500GB HDD only comes in SATA
An SATA hdd will not fit in a EIDE connector and you cannot get an adaptor to convert it Sorry.
You might get an adaptor to fit an SATA hdd in your DVD-RW bay, but you will loose the DVD-RW drive. -
Yep, it just won't work. And generally, I would say it's not worth it to upgrade the HDD of a machine using HDDs on the IDE interface.

so your telling me... i should just junk the computer?

For Emails, browsing the web, and word processing it will be fine, lots of people still use them.

Well that's what i was planning on doing with it, just for kicking around the house for web browsing. But the HDD in it decided to go last week. That's why I was going to replace it. I found some new and sealed Hitachi HDD on ebay for $50. Do you think it's worth it?

You need to purchase a new IDE drive for that Dell if you want a bigger drive. I think you can get those drives pretty cheap either here in the for sale section or via Ebay. I seem to recall WD makes either a 250gb or 320gb drive that will fit your Dell.

Do you know if they make an adapter that would convert my Samsung HM320JI into an IDE?

Get a WD1600BEVE. For $46 the fastest IDE drive you can get.

I found it on Amazon for $42! Thanks man!

Be careful 1600BEV S is a SATA drive.
You need WD1600BEV E. Actually I'm not sure the 1600BEVE is single platter. Better get the Samung HM160HC in that case. Cheaper too.
