    Hello,

    I got a Asus G1S-AK005C with a 5400RPM hard drive.
I actually want to upgrade to a 7200RPM drive because:
    - I want faster boot times
    - I want to write and read data faster (For work, for games=load times)

    So, now is my question:
Is it really worth it to upgrade to a 7200RPM (for the things above I want) ?
What hard drive do you guys recommend me? (I don't know a lot of HDD"s ;) )

    Thanks :)

Well, I have personally experienced the difference between a 4200RPM drive and a 5400RPM drive so there is very probably a noticeable difference between a 5400RPM drive and a 4200RPM drive. Of course this is just a rule of thumb and not an absolute law.

Here's a nice interactive comparison of various 2.5" drives on the current market: http://www23.tomshardware.com/storage25.html

So, the Seagate Momentus ST9160823ASG is one of the best 160GB HDD's I can get? :p

    Ok :)
I have also heard that a lot of people think that Seagate hard drives are better then the Hitachi ones, is this right?

    And what about the heat?
My HDD has a temperature of 42°C, will the Seagate 7200RPM run hotter? (And how much hotter?)

You know, I haven't had a totally pleasant experience with Hitachi drives in the past... I've got a few over the past years and they all work, but they're all kinda noisy. But then again, there's gotta be a reason they're one of the market leaders, right?

For the most part what I've heard is that Hitachi, Seagate and WD are all about on the same level in the HDD market.

I've got a Hitachi 80GB 7200RPM drive running at 41C. Right here, right now after about an hour on my lap at the airport XD

    Ok, im sure:
I will buy the Seagate Momentus ST9160823ASG :)

    BUT
    Now is my question:
When i take an image of my FULL hard disk (with the partitions,...) just everything !
Is there a way to get this image on my new (Seagate) hard disk ??
Then my windows works without installing it again and i still got all my data ??

    Thanks ;)

I upgraded my Asus G2S stock 160 gb 5400rpm HD a couple months ago to a Hitachi 7k200 Travelstar I believe (200 gb 7200 rpm). It runs at the exact same temp as the old Hitachi HD and should be around the same power consumption. Not sure if your Seagate will but it shouldn't be a big difference... Also, at the time when I did my research on finding a new HD, I found a large number of reviews/articles saying Hitachi has the best notebook drives, so I jumped for it, no problems so far, with my old hitachi or new one. The difference in speed isnt immense, but it is there, I believe i got +0.6 HD speed increase on that Vista Performance Information, to a total of 5.4 (not the best way to benchmark but hey, its fast and easy).

I'm not sure if the Seagate you are looking into is much newer then my Hitachi, but if it isn't I am quite sure the Hitachi would have been a better choice :p, either way though, it will be faster then a 5400 rpm...

About backing up, I'm sure Ghost does exactly that no?

Ok, I have made a FULL image (backup) from my Hard disk and i have placed it on my external hard disk...
    But now:
When I would put in my new HDD in my laptop, then i have to reinstall vista with my Asus recovery disk, then install the program True Image and place the FULL image i made from my old HDD OVER vista that i have installed on my new HDD.

    Is this right? :s :p

Wow, thanks for the link man :)

I checked it and indeed, the G1S is using Serial ATA-150 (this means it uses SATA 1.5 GB/s right? :p)

It looks like the Hitachi Travelstar 7K200 blows away all his concurrents
I thinks this drive becomes my final choice ^^

But i only got one question for you, D3X: What about the heat?? (On what temperature is your 7K200 running?)
My 5400 RPM drive is mostly 42°C

What do you guys recommend me?
    - The Seagate Momentus 7200.2 (ST9160823ASG)
    - The Hitachi Travelstar 7K200 (HTS722016K9A00)

    ??
Will the Seagate OR the Hitachi be the best drive for daily use (also boot up time) AND Gaming ?
    And what about noise difference?

    Thanks :)

I have both the 7K100 and the 7K200 and from my experience the 7K200 heat issues have been addressed to some degree. It runs a bit cooler at around 47-49°C, compared to the older one at 50-53°C. This all depends on the notebook it's going into and if there is enough air circulation, but the G1S shouldn't have any problems with the 7K200.

In general I recommend both drives:

Seagate Momentus 7200.2 is slightly slower, runs slightly cooler, and slightly quieter but has a 5 year warranty.
Hitachi Travelstar 7K200 is slightly faster, runs slightly hotter and slightly louder but has a 3 year warranty.

The difference between the 2 is very small though, and both drives are proven. Personally I would go with the Seagate simply because of the longer warranty.

Isn't it right that the Hitachi Travelstar has 16MB cache and the Seagate only 8MB ?
Does this make a lot of difference??
