I am going to be purchasing a new laptop with an HDMI out port. If I want to hook it up to my surround sound system do I need to purchase a 5.1 sound card? Will it output 5.1 channel surround sound via the HDMI port?

Specifically, I'm looking at the Sager NP8660 and the 5.1 sound card option available via xoticpc. Thanks so much!

No, you do not need a separate card. The laptop itself is capable of 7.1. You can use HDMI to your receiver or you can just get an RCA Y cable that connects from your headphone port to the receiver.
