I'm trying to extend my desktop to a 24" monitor (1920 x 1200 res) using HDMI.
Up to this point I've used VGA and it has worked perfectly, but I'm going with HDMI since it's superior.

I just hooked up my HDMI cable and ran into the following problem:
The picture displayed is unclear and oversized. By oversized I mean that it extends beyond the monitor, so I can move my mouse outside the monitor.

I know it's not the cable or laptop since I tried the same setup on an HDTV (1920 x 1080 res). I know it's not the 24" monitor since I've used it's HDMI port with my desktop and it worked well. So any ideas how I could solve this problem?

Make sure the monitor is set as the primary screen.

Also check the sound panel and enable SPDIF/Digital Out

When I go in to manually set the monitor, I can set it to 1:1 (which is pretty clear, but takes up like 50% of my monitor) 3:4 and 16:9 (which is the one I need).

Yeah, but it shouldn't have that problem. It auto-calibrates whenever I use either HDMI (except for this time) or VGA.

Is this using dual display clone (notebook + TV) by any chance? If it is, it will use the lowest resolution of the two monitors. So if your external monitor is 1920x1200, and your notebook is 1280x800 both displays will default to that resolution.

No, it's extending the desktop. The "extend my desktop to this monitor" option.
