My notebook only has HDMI output, and I only have tv's that take RCA or coaxial input. How do you run them off the HDMI?

No, It can't be. Every notebook has a VGA connector. I think this is the best option since you don't have a digital input on your TV. If your TV only has Coaxial and RCA, seems to me like an old standard definition CRT. In that case, you need a VGA to TV converter like this.

It does have a VGA output as well, I've just never heard of going VGA out to a tv.

Its easier & cheaper to get a VGA converter than a HDMI one.

VGA is analog just like the older TV inputs, HDMI is digital so it has to decode it and then recode it for analog. A harder process thus more expensive equipment.

    $30 vs $100+

Yes, Digital (DVI/HDMI) to analog (VGA/Component/Composite/S-Video) converters are very expensive.
