I really do know know the capabilities of HDMI.

I'm normally use VGA as an extended monitor. Could HDMI be used as an extending monitor? Does the HDMI carry the computers audio to the extended monitor?

HDMI only carries audio if you're computer has an hdmi port, and if your source has an HDMI port (and speakers)

HDMI is really DVI but with sound where available.
