Does such an animal exist? I want to get a HDMI from my laptop to my receiver that which only has an antiquated optical input for 5.1 digital surround. Any makes, brands, models, types of converter that can do this?

Don't you have built-in S/PDIF in your headphones jack? That's what I'm using. Also a friend of mine has a dv6 and he has S/PDIF as well.

You can get cheap USB soundcards that have SPDIF out. Make sure it has DTS or Dolby pass-through if you want to watch movies in surround sound. Amazon has quite a few devices in stock.

Thanks all, it took some doing but I finally found the converter I needed on ebay but unfortunately it costs $128.
My receiver still works fine, but not particularly worth putting that much into as a patch to get 5.1. I most likely will wait to upgrade my entire AV equipment--a major purchase--which originally took two year to piece together.
These ports going obsolete is one of the cons when purchasing a receiver over an integrated amp which is more readily upgraded.
