    I have a question,

    I know if there is a DisplayPort on PC then I can connect it to HDMI input on display using DisplayPort-HDMI cable.

    But if my laptop has HDMI output but my external display has DisplayPort can I use this cable to connect them?

    DisplayPort = VGA?

    You might need a HDMI to VGA converter and then use a normal VGA cable to your display.

    cheers ...

    Yeah but what if he doesn't want to use the VGA? I know the displayport cable itself has the same connector on both ends. The only question is if the convertor inside the adapter take 2 way traffic or only from DP to HDMI.

    DisplayPort is not VGA, it is a new digital port. e.g. Lenovo T500 comes equipped with it; some new displays have it too.

    @LPTP-LVR correctly interpreted my question.

    To rephrase my question: there is a cable that has HDMI connector on one end and DisplayPort on the other end; the laptop has HDMI port; the display has DisplayPort port; can I use the cable to connect laptop to display?

    I have a display with DisplayPort, I am looking for to buy a laptop. Should I buy a laptop with DisplayPort (that are still rare), or HDMI port would be sufficient to connect my future laptop to display - that's what I want to find out.

    Got ya (and my bad).

    I have not seen a HDMI to DisplayPort yet. Understanding that HDMI and DisplayPort are competitors, a notebook with DisplayPort output is your best bet. Dell ships them besides Lenovo, as I recall.

    cheers ...

    yup...i've got DP on mine and pretty much all the newer Dell's do.
    What kind of display do you have? If it's a 2560x1200 i'd definetly go for a laptop with DP because even if a DP to HDMI would work both ways there is no adapter supporting that resolution. Only same/same will do that.

    My display is 1920 × 1200 which is covered by HDMI 1.2.

    DisplayPort greatly limits my choices. I am considering Sager and I do not think any of them have DisplayPort, only HDMI :(

    I know there is an adapter,

    but will it work from a laptop's HDMI port to my display's DisplayPort?

    Well...i think it should. I thought you were talking about a DP to HDMI cable, which would need an adapter in it to convert the signal. I think it'll be as simple as plugging it into your screen and hooking up the HDMI....Why not just order the adapter and check with another laptop with HDMI before ordering a new laptop?

    Adapter is a passive device, it does not do anything to the signal.

    I guess I'll have to experiment, unfortunately my company laptop does not have HDMI.

    Thanks for your time!
