I have a VGA cable to connect my notebook to my 22" monitor. Will the VGA be as good as the HDMI? If not if someone could explain the visual difference that would be great.

I don't need the audio I don't think. I'd assume the audio jack I run into my speakers should be OK for now.

Yes you will notice a difference, VGA will have a bit of an grainy picture making some images to have a lot of grain around the darker areas, it also has a worse black, tends to have a tint mixed into it.

Its usually in areas with black.

With HDMI you dont get grain and you should get better color. The reasoning is that HDMI is a digital connection while VGA is a analog connection.

I'm ordering an HP DV7T. Do I want a HDMI 1.3 cable? I'm not sure what 1.3 means, but I see some sites list it.

1.3 is the latest version. That cable is the one you want, just don't buy it from HP, go to your local electronic (tv or computer) dealer since you should be able to pick it up cheaper (and you don't need a "brand" name cable since they're all the same).

You may want to buy one with the blocks on each end to lower noise in the connection.

Could you be more specific about the Blocks please?

i dunno what the blocks are all about, but make sure you get an HDMI 1.3b cable that has the gold plated tips. you can easily find any size for under $10 online, maybe under $5. this is what i have connecting my dv7t to a 24" LCD. honestly, i didnt notice much of a difference from the VGA, but then again i guess i dont have much of a discriminating eye when it comes to these things.

I have never seen a difference on any S-IPS, TN screen or LCD TV when using DVI/HDMI vs VGA, both runs with perfect quality in my eyes.

You also don't get HDCP with VGA cable meaning no blu-ray...

Probably referring to ferrite cores, supposedly decreases picture noise. Monoprice sells all kinds of cables. I'm actually looking for something to get my own lappy-plasma connection started too.

Something like this should do the trick just fine http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10240&cs_id=1024007&p_id=3871&seq=1&format=2 No use paying $60, or even $30 for a simple cable just for the name MONSTER.

Yeah the cheapest HDMI cable will work just fine. You don't need the ferrite cores for a short run since the signal is strong enough to overcome most interference.

The power of VGA is variable.
My Dell E1505 has a ATi X1400, and it can run my 24" screen without any problems.
I am currently running a 4Mb Matrox Millenium in my Octitron for lack of a good powersupply to use my high end card. The 4mb Matrox can surprisingly run the screen just as good as the X1400.
However when I use my 8mb ATi Rage XL, the colors are out of whack. They are like 24 bit color, but it is set at 32 bit color mode. Some cards are better than others at VGA. You can see the color difference between the X1400 and the rage XL. The difference is quite noticeable. You can probably see the difference at 15 ft away. The colors are just not right.
I really hope silverstone replaces my power supply so I can use my big graphics cards.

I picked up the cable for only a few dollars from the link above. Thank you.
