    Hello everyone.
Need an opinion and hopefully from someone who has attempted and succeeded doing what I would like to accomplish. I own a loaded Dell XPS M1530 and recently just purchased a second-hand Dell 2007WFP (with analog and digital connections at the back). The LCD is really nice with an LG S-IPS panel (1680x1050 or something like that, it is 20" LCD). I plan on using it to edit photos and videos. What is the best way of connecting this to my laptop? The laptop has HDMI and VGA (no DVI). The LCD has DVI-D, VGA, S-VIDEO, Component. I read online about a HDMI-to-DVI-D cable, but it is mainly used to connect HD TVs with HDMI to laptop or desktop with DVI-D connection. My situation is reversed. Will I have any issues if I try it? I don't want to invest a lot of money only to end up using VGA. Anyone was successful at it? Laptop didn't come with any converters. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

HDMI to DVI cables are cheap and work well for your situation.

I'm using a HDMI to DVI cable with My M1330 and external iiyama 22” monitor. There is a noticeable quality difference between that and VGA cable, therefore I highly recommend it. HDMI to DVI is fully digital (no transformations = no quality loss). It is just a physical adapter conversion.

Thanks everyone. I was just afraid after reading few posts that people had color rendition problems and some even weird resolution problems. I suppose I might need to tweak few settings in NVidia control panel, etc but nothing major. Thanks.

Thanks for your respose and I was wandering, would you recommend using special gold-plated cables (lenths being 8' or so), or will I be just fine with a basic cheap one from ebay? Thanks again.

For shorter lengths (couple of feet) you don’t have to worry too much about the cable quality, even those cheap $10 eBay cables will do fine. I think even those cheap ones have gold plated connectors.
