E7k200 is made more for server type environment. That is to say, situations where the hard drive is on for extended periods such as blade servers. (However you can still use it in a notebook)
I believe E7k line have less power savings modes builit in. Also the maximum operating temperature is lower, thus being able to guarantee better reliability.
Here's an article to read by SilentPCReview, in regards to the E7k100.

Has anyone tried the 160 GB 7200 rpm fujitsu drive yet? My experience with fujitsu drives is that they are very quiet and don't get as hot as the hitachi drives.

Have any of you folks with the Samsung HM250JI seen an issue of the drive just stopping in Windows? I have this drive set up as the secondary drive in my HP dv9000T, and I've had the drive just turn off a BUNCH of times, and running both Samsung's drive test and my HP's BIOS hard drive test show the drive as fine...but it still just turns itself off, stops showing in Windows until I reboot. Drive temps seem to run around 45* C when it's idle, and gets into the low 50s if I'm moving data to/from it- but I don't see how temp is an issue.
I can't recall if I had the problem with it while running Vista (two primary hard drives- one Vista Ultimate 32-bit, one XP Pro SP2 so I can swap between the two OS), but I"m pretty sure it dropped out on me DURING writes in Vista...I haven't seen it stop during writes/data transfers under XP, but if the machine is running for a while (like overnight), when I try using it again, the drive is gone.
Odd, and quite irritating... -
I'm thinking of sending back my HM250JI but I have the feeling I will get back another faulty Drive.
Does anyone here has a HM250JI working properly with the intel core duo chipset (not the new santa rosa )?
When I say properly I mean good performance (normal HD tune graph), no clicky noise , no overheating....
Mine seems fine only when I use it extrernally in a USB enclosure. -

I am also interested to know which hardware the HM250JI does and does/not work with. My problem is with the Intel 945PM chipset. This is the hardware I would have expected Samsung to have been using for testing since Santa Rosa wasn't launched at the time the HM250JI started production.
My HM250JI's firmware version is HS100-06. Has anyone got other versions?
John
PS: Should we start a new thread specifically for the HM250JI? We seem to have hijacked this one. -
When I had my Samsung drive, it also exhibited a very noticeable loud click sound. Time period between the loud sound was random, sometimes long period in between, other times short. Also the firmware for the exchanged drive was HS100-06 as well.
So far it seems the HM250JI does work but it may not be that great of a harddrive. At least my opinion from my experiences with it.
As for thread hijack, doesn't matter to me but new thread may be a good idea. -

jjalert you have a different model. I dont see that model listed on Hitachi.com. The 2 models we are talking about are the HTS722020K9A300 or the HTS722020K9SA00

I recently swapped the pair of 7k100's in my laptop for 7k200's and just want to post some first hand observations.
1. The 7k200's are almost *silent*. The 7k100's made soft clicking noises during read/write typical of a laptop hdd, but these 7k200's are FAR quieter. I cannot hear them at all unless I'm in a completely quiet room with no noise or sounds or music and I listen very closely. Actually, I'd say these are the quietest laptop drives I have (and I have three laptops).
2. The 7k200's are cooler. I can feel the underside of the laptop where the drives are is noticeably cooler. I checked the labels on the two drives and now I see why: The 7k100 says it consumes 5v 1.1A and the 7k200 says 5v 800mA. So the new drives draw considerably less power. This will help your battery life as well.
3. The 7k200's are *fast*!! I have my two 7k200's in a RAID1 mirror, and when I kicked off the re-sync, it was running at close to 60 MB/s.
I'm very pleased with these 7k200's, easily the best laptop drive out there. -
How would the 7k200 compare to the HD I have now? Would I be able to notice a difference? Lastly, would start-up be quicker? Here's the stats:
Transfer Rate
Min: 0.6 MB/sec
Max: 24.0 MB/sec
Ave: 15.2 MB/sec
Access Time: 30.3 ms
Burst Rate: 63.3 MB/sec
CPU Usage: 19.8% -

Those results are very slow . . . what are the specifications of the hard drive you have? It is either a very slow hard drive or it is in PIO mode.
If it is simply a slow hard drive then you will notice a large difference by going to a 7K200. -
A 7k100 should be plenty fast...those numbers are not normal. As Chaz said, PIO mode is a possibility. Your drive might also be failing, but not 100% sure.
-
It's a 5 year old 4200 rpm. As long as it doesn't fail until after I transfer everything to my new laptop with its 7k200 it's all good. I'm guessing it's just really slow though
-
Here's my result for the 7K200:

Lyshen, I noticed you've got the 7K200 in your SZ. I've currently got a 5400rpm drive in mine and have been considering the 7K200 for a while now. Would it be possible for you to do some battery life tests? I'm curious as to whether the battery life would drop or not.
-
As I promised, a while back, here is my RAID 5 (fakeraid) HD Tune 2.53 score.

I have a few of the 200GB Hitachi Travelstars left to sell. They are brand new. Selling for $189 + Shipping costs. PM me if you are interested.
-
i have seen 7K200 200GB reaches a max 100M/s in M1730 while 7K200 200GB only gets a max 66.5M/s transfer rate in vostro 1400, there is big gap in disk control chip set performance obviously.

I'm pretty confident that the 7K200s in the 1730 are in RAID 0.
-
Well, I believe the reliability and the 5 years warranty are enough to go for the 7k200.
Regarding to speeding up those results check this out:

I was using a Samsung HM080JI... after using UltimateDefrag

something wrong with your original 7K100 benches as they seem restricted at the beginning of the graph. Here is my benchmark, not the greatest either as I was doing some browsing at the background.
Definately closer in performance to the 7K200...Attached Files:

Here's benchmarks of my Hitachi 120GB 5400RPM installed in my T61p
What's with the big drops now and then?... dont have any stuff running in background
