Hey guys. I need help from anyone who already tried this or knows something.
I have Sony VAIO F12 with I7-740QM and PM55 chipset. And I want to know if Pentium P6200 which has GPU will work in my machine. I know that GPU shouldn't but all I need to know if it will boot up??? I just want to know if I still will be able to work on my laptop.
I am going to sell my I7-740QM and swap on his CPU for a short time until I buy I7-840QM and it arrives. So...
Please don't stay silent. Tell what you know!

If they both run on the same generation chipset, it should work just fine.
-
What I know is that on official Intel site My I7-740QM has such compatible products like PM55, HM55, HM57 and other while p6200 only HM55 and HM57. I just want to know if I can use it on half at least so it could just work for browsing. Even if it will work on 1 core I will be fine because I just don't want to wait for longer than 2 weeks for new I7-840QM. Besides since today I even will need to search for another I7-840QM seller.
I CAN'T BELIEVE that nobody tried smth like this!
So you still assume it will work fine? -

Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Am I assuming it is the Sony in your sig? I know some person with an IdeaPad tried to go from a P6200 to an Arrandale i3 or i5 and it did not POST. May depend on your laptop BIOS. You may want to have this moved to the Sony subforum to get more hits...

Tsunade, he is trying to do the reverse.
Ummm, it works just fine. I've done it. Absolutely very little reason why it wouldn't work.
I ran an i5 in my w870cu. I had a very early BIOS version. When I booted, it said something like "CPU microcode missing".
However, it booted fine and everything worked perfectly. And an update to the BIOS made the message go away. -

Make sure you CPU heatsink contact area is large enough.

Ok. Thank you all guys for your responds! And thanks Tsunade but as I niffcreature said I am trying to do the reverse and I know all I can get from my laptop's Owners Thread.
Niff, you say you had that message with an I5 inside or else processor? -

I had that message with an i5, I have never tried a pentium.
Basically if it doesn't work, its because of sheer stupidity on the manufacturers part.
If you want to make 110% sure, and you have a phoenix BIOS, it may be possible to disassemble it and check the microcodes included.
At this point it would also probably be pretty easy to add the microcode.
Even if the microcode was missing, like in my case, it should still boot and work fine. So, the only circumstance brought on by potential manufacturer stupidity would have to involve whitelisting or other intentional BIOS lockouts.
The only possible reason for you to still be afraid is that Sony is more likely to do this than Clevo or some other brands.
There you have it, that was quite a trip into hypotheticals.
And Meaker, again hes coming from an i7 quad so I don't think that will be a problem. -
Well it is not the only reason it may not work. It is one hardware reason why I asked this question. Intel® Pentium® Processor P6200 (3M Cache, 2.13 GHz) there are only 2 chipsets which are supported by this processor and no PM55 in this list.
BTW You have PM55 chipset, right? It supports 520m, 540m, 560m and 580m. Is your I-5 one of these?
I will check my BIOS but I know that I even can't put an I7-940QM inside because of BIOS being locked. So I am more than interesting in modding it. Do you know anyone who is kind enough to mess with this?
EDIT||| Have just found a laptop with PM55 chipset and same Pentium CPU. Looks like the only left reason is BIOS but none of you guys have Sony VAIO BIOS so it is now depends on me. Perhaps will try this soon and go exchange processors. -
Hi James D,
I own the Sony Vaio F11. I would like to replace my i7 720QM with a i5 580M for less heat and noise. Can you take photos for changing the CPU please?
Thanks -

Greetings! Hope that you've managed to deal with those processor transplants guys, I have similar question - you think that it would be possible to put some faster cpu in place of i7-720QM on PM55 chipset? thanks in advance! i have vaio f11s1e and i am interested in one of these i7 extreme editions cpus, dont know if they wont heat too much or need more power...
-
If it overheats, you will have to mod the heatsink and chassis to make sure it does not overheat -
Thank you
It is old thread though and I have more knowledge than then.
HELP!!! Has anyone tried to put CPU with integrated GPU in PM55 chipset laptop??? Like p6200 CPU for example?
