I just replaced my Toshiba 60GB with a 100GB Seagate 5400rpm in January.I'm now getting error messages stating that SMART detects imminent hard drive failure.I got the exact same message b4 my previous hard drive went sout on me.The disc has no bad sectors;I bought it from Newegg only two months ago.
The major problem here is that I'm currently in Nigeria(that's in Africa for the geographically challenged) and I am not likely to return to the US for at least another 3 months. There are no nearby service centers I can trust. Is there anything I can do?
I don't know if this is related, but since the error message started coming up,inserting a DVD and attempting to play it with Windows Media Player 10 or Real Player causes the PC to blue screen on me,then reboot. The DVDs play fine if I use WinDVD 4 though.
I own a HP Pavilion zx5040US,2.8GHz,512MB RAM running WinXP Home.

Well...SMART's usually pretty reliable. Check in your BIOS and see if there's an option to disable it. Do your lockups continue to happen? If not, I'd suspect the motherboard to be at fault...specifically the IDE channel. It could be the cable as well.

One thing you can do to double check your seagate hard drive is to go to www.seagate.com and download seatools. Run it and it should tell you if there is something wrong with your drive.
HELP!!!SMART error
