Since upgrading to Vista I have two major problems:

    1. I cannot change my monitor resolution
    2. I cannot install updates -- computer will not turn back on until I do a system restore.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Did you install drivers for your video card?
What updates are you trying to install?

What's a video card? Is that the Radeon 9200 thing?

Just trying to install Microsoft Updates when it tells me to.

    Thanks!!!

    Hi Lee Ann,
I'm not sure if your card is supported under Vista . . . but try this.
    Go here:
    http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html
Select 32-bit Edition under Windows Vista; then select Mobility Radeon, then Radeon 9600 (there is no 9200 listed). Then click Go. On the next page, click Catalyst Software Suite (32 bit) English Only.
That will initiate the driver download. Once it's downloaded, try installing it. I don't know if it will work because you have a Radeon 9200. It's worth a try though. If you can't get it to work then post back here and I or someone else can help you with an alternative method of installing drivers.

LeeAnne - its good to hear that someone else is still struggling along with the infamous x1000 series. I just upgraded my x1010US to 768 mb of ram - I hadn't noticed until this past week that only one memory slot is easily accessible. It cost me almost $300 to get the first (faulty) graphics card replaced two years ago and it has run great since. I've seen several times that the "9200" graphics card on them is just an overclocked ATI 9000. Good luck...

That did not work. I looked in my events log and it said my plug & play monitor did not install properly / completely when I upgraded to Vista...a week ago...a very bad mistake I'm afraid.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

    Happy Easter.

Your graphics card doesn't support DirectX 9/Shader Model 2 in hardware, and as such isn't compatible with Vista. Also, it seems you tried to do a non-destructive upgrade...that's bad. Never in the history of the Windows operating system has that worked right. Always, and I do mean always, go ahead and reformat when installing a new version of Windows.

But you can't run Aero anyways with that video card (no accelerated drivers mean no widescreen resolutions, too), so it looks like you're in a for a reformat back to XP anyways. I really wish I had better news, but that's kind of what you get for not reading the system requirements.
