Hey there, I have a Compaq/Presario notebook (windows XP).

My CD-Rom/DVD drive is currently uninstalled. I had some problems with it and the troubleshooter told me to uninstall it then reinstall it. Problem is, I don't know how to reinstall it.

If ANYONE can help me out I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you!

Um, well when I put in the disk, you have hear it spinning really fast like a fan, and then it stops.

When I first got the labtop, it would give me options when i inserted th disk. Like whether I wanted to open it as a folder, music file, play it as a DVD etc.

It doesn't do that. Disk goes in. Spins really fast, then it stops. On 'MY COMPUTER', it doesn't even show that its there. Then I went onto the Help and Support, did a little scan, and found out tht it's still uninstalled.

    No, it doesn't.

I went on the support and help and it showed it as being "uninstalled".

    I just don't know how to re-install it. I don't think I have a disk anywhere....??

In Device Manager, right click on the name of your computer at the top of the list and select Scan for Hardware Changes. This should detect the drive and reinstall it. You can also use Add New Hardware in Control Panel.

How long have you had the notebook? The DVD/CD-RW drive on my Presario from 2002 died after three years. Had to send it back in.

A good way to check to see if your DVD/CD-RW drive is still working is to insert your Compaq QuickRecovery CD in and reboot the laptop. Go into your BIOS and make sure the boot order has the DVD/CD-RW drive first. Now save and exit, then let it boot up again.

If you see the Compaq recovery center tool screen, then your drive is fine and you just need a software update (probably a driver, check it out on the HP/Compaq site). However, if you don't see the Compaq recovery screen and instead boot into Windows as usual, your drive may be physically damaged or dead.

Try it out and good luck!

I just finished doing that and it said the hardware could not start, CODE 10.

    Any idea what that is?

    Gatordude:

The notebook was a new gift a little before x-mas. Its very new, straight outta the box.

Also, I didn't make a "recovery disk". I know, I'm wicked dumb for doing so, but I wasn't thinking. Any idea if I still have a shot at making a new "recovery CD"?

    Please!

It's driving me crazy that I don't have a Disk Drive to listen or use CDs!

Have you tried to use system restore? Keep hitting f8 just before windows xp loads up and boot up in safe mode, then read the instructions on the screen. You want to restore to a point where the optical drive was working.

I tried the system restore just by going to Help and Support. It said that it couldn't go to the specified restore point.

I HAVEN'T tried it with booting up in Safe Mode. I'll try that, hope that makes a difference.

    Thanks for the idea :)
