    Hi Guys
I need some help with upgrading my CPU, i've searched the internet but am struggling to find the last piece of the puzzle so to speak. My laptop is a compaq presario a900 with an intel T2390 CPU socket P, my mother board has an intel GM965 chipset and according to its data sheet :-

    http://www.intel.com/Assets/PDF/datasheet/316273.pdf

supports upto an intel core 2 duo CPU with a maximum 800Mhz FSB. My current CPU has a lithography rating of 65nm, i've read on some forums that i may need to upgrade my bios if i wanted a CPU with a rating of 45nm, my current bios on my HP mother board is F.33. I have googled this question many times but am unable to find a solid answer whether or not i would need to or can upgrade my bios. The intel T8000 series and over are all 45nm or would i have to stick to the T7000 series CPU which have the 65nm rating.

or can someone recommend the best replacement for my T2390

    cheers
    Lee

It looks like the A900 shipped with 800MHz FSB Core 2 Duo as a standard option... 800MHz FSB T7xxx and T8xxx should work fine. Make sure you have the latest BIOS.

Most users will see a bigger performance boost from upgrade to a faster hard drive or SSD than the CPU.

go for T9300 or T9500, that's your best bet. Upgrade BIOS as needed, it's not that hard.

    my brother upgraded from a 65nm t7100 to a 45nm t8100 on a dell d630. Well worth getting for a tenner.

However no point getting it on your machine as yours is very basic and is not well built and has no gpu. I would recommend you to sell your laptop as you laptop goes for a bit on ebay and you can get a far better machine for a similar price.

I would second this unless you know for sure you are being CPU limited in some specific task.

I would also second this if you were trying to shell out the $120 or so for a T9500, but I think a T8100 or T8300 is is cheap enough such that the upgrade is probably a better option if the other qualities of the notebook suffice for your needs.

I'd suggest the ebay method as well. Sell it and add some $$$ to get a much better pc.
