today whilst i was using my laptop and browsing the intenet the wireless card switched off and the light on the hadware switch went off.
i tried switching the hardware switch on and off but it did nothing so i restarted the computer and noticed the light came back on but after a few seconds on my desktop it went off again.
i then turned off the laptop, unplugged it from the mains and removed the battery and held down the power switch for around 15 seconds.
i then switched the aptop on again and when it got to the windows loading screen it stayed on it for ages and didnt go off it so i restarted the computer again. this time it ran disk check which took absolutely ages then it rebooted again before getting stuck on windows loading.
i restarted once more and it loaded but the wireless card still went off after a few seconds on my desktop. i am now running a virus scan and have backed up any work on my computer but cant connect to the internet thus why i am on my brothers desktop writing this message.

moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
maybe the wireless card is faulty?
If it is a miniPCIe card then it is easy to swap out. you can get miniPCIe wireless cards under $50 I think.
I would try taking out the wireless card and see if the notebook works fine without it.
Also update the wireless driver and software. -
Try disabling power saving modes for the wireless card via the advanced settings in Vista's power management.

ok ill just go and try that and heres some more info
when i let windows identify the problem it says the hardware switch is off and tells me to switch it on. the switch is already on
the wireless card does come up in device manager and when i do properties it says its working -
i tried it but it made no difference but thanks for suggesting that

I read your original post in greater detail and I do think it's also worth the time to check Event Viewer for any driver failures or hardware issues. Chances are the OS detected that something went awry.
