I wonder if the helium makes the hdd weigh less![]()
I read a while ago that we were running out of helium, so what gives?

The weight of the air or the helium wouldn't affect the weight (of course).
Why are we running out of helium and more importantly, who cares? Are these the same money hungry idiots that claim humans are warming the earth?
We can produce helium, no?
As for the HGST drives, yeah; they've been running on helium for a while. Hitachi; still innovating big storage subsystems on the 1900's based mechanical principles. Go Hitachi! -
The weight reduction from switching to helium will be completely inconsequential, I estimate maybe a few milligrams at best.
As to helium itself, Nature has a piece on what it does and why there's a shortage. If you want a tldr version then read this Washington Post article.Last edited: Apr 9, 2015tilleroftheearth likes this. -
If it's an enclosed volume, it will weigh less, although only by a really, really tiny amount.
No; it's generally distilled out of natural gas, as a valuable by-product. It's present in air in such low concentrations that it's effectively impractical to try and extract.tilleroftheearth likes this. -

While we may potentially run out of helium on Earth; the universe is waiting.
(Thanks to all for the info and links). -
Yeah oddly enough, helium is the second-most abundant element in the universe in general, but quite near the other end of the spectrum of availability on earth specifically.

I refuse to be limited by the universe, let alone the earth!

Starlight5 Yes, I'm a cat. What else is there to say, really?
I believe if human evolution chose a path different to consumerism, we'd already conquer galaxies not only in TV shows and computer games.
