I spotted this over at HP's FTP - a firmware update for the Intel SSD 320 Series (version 4PC10365).

This version is newer than the one currently being offered by Intel (directly through the Solid-State Drive Toolbox 3.0, which is 4PC10362).

HP offers their updates in a Softpaq package, which is the same as a self-extracting exe. The package includes the following files:

    • HP09110365.iso
    • IntelSSDUpdate.exe
    • README.txt (available below)

<s>To my knowledge, this firmware update seems to be vendor-independent (but am not completely sure, it's something to look into).</s>

Update: Based on the current models that are supported, this firmware update only applies to Intel SSDs that have been provided with an HP notebook.

As a reminder, please use caution and follow the instructions carefully to ensure that a safe and successful firmware update is applied. Flash at your own risk! This is simply being posted for reference purposes.

I am not too sure I would update the FW from HP. What would happen if you installed the SSD in a non HP laptop? Just curious if there would be any lingering effects. This has to be a HP problem only or Intelk would have released it. The last thing I want is to have some HP specific code on my SSD. If you are not having the problems they described I wouold not do it. My opinion only.

    Toyo, agree 100%.

They're not improving Intel's product: they're fixing their broken implementation of SSD 'compliance' in their products.

I updated the first post to reflect that this update only applies to Intel SSDs that come bundled with HP notebooks.

Sorry guys for the confusion - I didn't initially know the compatibility status of this firmware update (since I'm not completely familiar with the Intel SSD model naming convention).

No probs - unless someone, somehow has the 'luck' to update a non-HP product and runs into issues later.

I love these kind of posts - but as you've now learned; they're for specific users. :)

The sp54887.exe is firmware Version: 4PC1365 REV A.

    There is a newer version date "04 Jan 2012" -> 4PC1365.

For reference here is the link that I found on HP site:

    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp55501-56000/sp55508.exe

    Release Notice:
    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp55501-56000/sp55508.html

Intel insisted that this HP firmware is only HP specific to HP hardware, After reading the release notice from HP is clearly state that the firmware is to fix:
    ============================
Quote from the sp55508 release notice:

For the Intel SSD 320 Series models:
    - Fixes an intermittent issue where the system does not restart (reboot) and
displays the "Boot device not found" error message after resuming from
    hibernation mode.
    - Fixes an issue where data is not completely saved to the hard drive and is
lost when the system is suddenly powered off.
    ============================

Doesn't it sound familiar. Yes, it is to fix the 8MG BUG!!!!!!

Clearly this is not an update for HP hardware specific problem, but to fix Intel SSD drive!

I wish Intel come clean and clarify to all of us what is going on the following points:

    a) Is it hardware issue involve the Intel internal Controller?
    b) What exactly the firmware do or fix, is the firmware is just work around the hardware bug? Obviously, the new Intel firmware did not fix the 8MG Bug.
    c) If It is Hardware issue on certain production batch of bad drive? If so, Intel should do the right thing: recall the defective drives, and inform us which batch is defective!
    e) Why Intel take so long to acknowledge the 8Meg Bug, and release a firmware that didn't fix the 8MG bug and hoping the problem will go away by itself!
    f) Why HP already released 2 (TWO) firmwares update after Intel release?
    g) If none the above question is relevant, RELEASE the WORKING FIRMWARE NOW!

Intel addressed the 8 mb bug last year...in August. Here are release notes from Intel:

    http://downloadmirror.intel.com/18363/eng/Release Notes.pdf

The 8 mb fix was long ago. I have an HP Envy 17 with the 320 drive in it...Frankly the HP release is a bust, since it won't install on my system. I am running the most up to date Intel release and things are fine...

    TO Bobmitch!

Obviously that you don't have problem with your drive yet!

However, there are many of us still have the infamous 8MEG BUG with our drive.
Here is one of the discussion link at Intel Forum:

Anyone else had a repeat 8mb brick on 320 ssd AFTER firmware update.

Read carefully what I stated before you jumped the gun to defend Intel!

I don't think he was defending Intel. He just wasn't being hysterical and stretching the truth. There was an issue and Intel was slow to acknowledge and fix it. I have the 320 drive and 0 problems as well. I got mine in mid-January and it shipped with the latest firmware. No reason here for defending Intel. It would be a PITA if that happened, but that's why I always back up my stuff.

Why would I defend Intel? I found ONE firmware update via Intel toolbox, when I received my machine from HP. What is really odd about the HP update...I tried three times to install it on my Envy 17 and it will NOT install. Somehow, even HP botched it. I do have the latest Intel firmware installed and do not seem to have any issues at this time...that is my position. Frankly...I am saving a few $$ at a time and am considering a 512GB from Samsung to replace my 320. Probably frivolous, but my laptop chipset supports SATA III

Funny...just got off the phone with HP. They cannot figure out why I can't use THEIR firmware flasher on my HP Envy 17. Seems that because my bios defaults to AHCI, that it won't flash from the virtual floppy reboot. I also told them that there is an issue with the 320 series STILL, even after the Intel release last year...see here:

    http://communities.intel.com/thread/24339?start=0&tstart=0

This is gonna get interesting, that IF HP actually figured out a fix and Intel isn't releasing it...then Intel is being negligent

I have read all those posts about repeated bricking and I am wondering if the problem occurs when upgrading to the newest firmware instead of a drive shipped with the newest version. Although I did notice one person said their's bricked with the latest version installed already. But most of the posts on 4 pages were by folks flashing to the latest version. Just a stab in the dark.

FWIW, I would move to a SATA 3 drive if I had SATA 3. The HP version number is 3 higher than the current 4PC10362. Wonder why they skipped the numbers in between.

Not sure, all I know is that I upgraded to the latest when I got my Envy from HP. They were running an old firmware. Did the update through Intel Toolbox. If the thread is correct...it seems as though it is possible for it to happen again. I don't let my Envy sleep, nor hibernate or any of that...so I will hopefully avoid that...gives me a reason to get a new SSD.

    Hello all,

i want to share my HP elitebook 8460p with SSD 320 series problems.

    Hard drive Specifications :
    1. Model Number : INTEL SSDSA2BW160G3H
    2. Model SERIES : INTEL SSD 320 SERIES 160 GB (show as 8 MB in intel SSD toolbox)
    3. Serial Number : BAD_CTX 0000013F (shown in intel SSD toolbox)
    4. Firmware : 4PC10365

    PROBLEMS :

    1. Bluescreen error in windows vista enterprise 32 bit after automatic update in my company.
    2. After restarting the notebook i got the following message in the startup "REBOOT AND SELECT PROPER BOOT DEVICE". My windows wouldn't even start.
    3. I connect my SSD into another computer as secondary drive and boot to the windows. Check in the disk management, i found my harddrive is only 8 MB. Many of the forum called this "8 MB BUG". Note : my SSD harddrive is not shown in my computer.

    SOLUTIONS TRIED :

    1. HP software & driver : I downloaded "Intel Solid State Drive (SSD) Firmware Update" on website "http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=5056943&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=5056942&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=2097" and trying to do install SP52887 directly from windows and it says "setup status : this harddrive model is not supported : ST380013AS" which is my first harddrive (not the SD). The most updated firmware, i try to install SP5508 and it says "update status : This harddisk model is not supported". SP52887 installer is also comes with disk images to update firmware from boot process, i also do this and it says "your harddrive is having the latest firmware, no upgrade is needed". So, i think i have no luck with HP software & driver.
    2. Intel SSD toolbox : I downloaded Intel SSD toolbox from website "http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18455&lang=eng%20" and i cannot update to the latest firmware because of i have the latest firmware already. The only thing left is "SECURE ERASE" and it's the last thing i want to do because it will delete all the data in the SSD hard drive.

    QUESTIONS :
Anybody know how to fix SSD 320 series harddrive without secure erase it ?
