HP 8510/8710w - are CPU's upgradeable?

Are the CPU's in the HP 8510/8710 series easily upgradeable?

I am thinking about the new T7800, X7800 and X7900 Extreme CPU's.

 

What do you have in there now?

 

I have the T7500.

 

Same socket same FSB so looks like yes.

 

Ha, all you'll be doing in that upgrade is throwing out a few hundred bucks and risk breaking your computer permanently.

Why would upgrading the CPU break my computer?

 

You make it sound so easy. If you bend/break a pin, short the mobo...

Now I don't know your skill with computers, but I've dealt with people who point to their computer and call it a modem.

 

I am not sure if the X7800/X7900 are going to be work . . . they have a 44W TDP compared to the standard Core 2 Duo's 35W. The 8510's cooling system is already strained so putting in a much hotter CPU is not going to help matters. Your notebook could overheat. Also, the power adapter may not be able to supply enough power.

I suggest asking HP if they are going to put in the Extreme CPUs.

Oh and by the way, the X7800 is a waste of money, it's as fast as the T7800 which is less.

 

What about the 8710? Do 17" models have better cooling?

From what I understand, the X7800/X7900 have their multipliers unlocked so they can be overclocked much more easily that the T7*00 series.

There is a guy on this forum who has put a X7800 into his T61p. I wonder how his mod is working out.

 

By what I've seen in the service manual about 8710w, it's processor is very easy to upgrade as you don't need to take the whole case apart, but to remove keyboard and some elements only, unlike the dv9500 series...So, I am thinking of putting T7800 into my 8710w instead of T7300.

 

I have upgraded the RAM to 4gb, and HDD to 200gb running at 7.2k rpm on my 8710w RM265UT. So far, I have not broken any pins or shorted out any mobo's. Yes, this HP is fairly simple to upgrade compared to my T41p, which has a CPU (1.7Mhz Banias to 2.1Mhz Dothan) and RAM upgrade (1gb to 2gb). Too bad the backlight on the 4 yr old IBM crapped out on me.

I am waiting for the T9500 to become readily available (hopefully HP will release a BIOS upgrade for the new Penryn's) before I next attempt to break my perfectly running 8710w, or was that the modem?

 

I have a 8510w but i can't find a manual that shows u how to remove the keyboard and so on to replace CPU and maybe GPU... Someone who can help me?

 

This is an old thread, but just to say, there is no point in doing so and you will void that 3 years warranty. Which would be a very bad decision and you will be throwing away one of the best warranties.

 

agree with johnny T. HP business class notebook is a one expensive investment to experiment with. I have na hp 8510p wiht T7300 cpu, I'm quite satisfied with the performance running vista business 64 bit. Only thing I upgraded is the ram from 2 gb to 4 gb. But if you are on the adventurous side and a deep pocket then you can try to upgrade whatever your heart desires

 

Has anyone upgraded their T7XX0 series CPU's to the Penryn T9X00 series?
I have a 8710w that has remained intact since Nov, 07 but I am itching to upgrade the CPU from the T7500 to the T9500.

 

I should work if you do it right. I have a T9300 in mine.

 

Did you upgrade from a T7300/7500?
