As an owner of a Hp 8510P laptop I'm wanting to gather information on the best of the available hardware/software or absolutely any modifications to turn this into an impressive if limited Gaming platform.

    My specifications are as follows

    Hp 8510p
    Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz
    Bios F.0c
    Windows XP
    1 GB Ram
    75GB hard drive
    HD 2600 256mb Dedicated graphics
    8Cell battery.

Now I'm pushing some very reasonable framerates out of titles such as Crysis but I still wish to max this £200 machine out.

Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz (Any Overclocking programs?)
    Bios F.0c (Best version?)
    Windows XP (Upgrade to Vista?)
1 GB Ram (What Ram chips are compatible with this model? I believe it is PC2-5300 RAM)
75GB hard drive (Not too concerned but any info/suggestions would be appreciated)
HD 2600 256mb Dedicated graphics (Overclocking software REQUIRED!)
8Cell battery (Adequate enough, but any suggestions on upgrades?)

Other problems - When adjusting the volume my programs such as games minimize due to a graphical representation of the adjustment on screen - any methods around this?

    Thoughts and opinions/comments and suggestions....

I simply got rid of the volume meter because I would never look at it anyways... but besides that, no idea.

    You can do some upgrades.
The processor can be upgraded to any socket P Santa Rosa processor. I would say the T9300/T9500 would be the best options for a cpu upgrade

    The memory can be upgraded to 4Gb (2 x 2GB) PC5300 DDR2 sodimm memory
Please note a 32 bit operating system will only see around 3GB of memory

You can upgrade the harddrive to any 2.5" 9.5mm thick SATA drive.
The 320gb or 500gb series 7200rpm drives would be a good option for a cpu upgrade.

The graphics card is not upgradeable, and I think your battery is already the best available for that system.

As far as bang for the buck upgrades
upgrade to 3-4Gb of memory first. It should only cost around $40
The harddrive would be the next most beneficial upgrade. You can get a 320gb 7200rpm drive for around $50-60 after rebate
The cpu is the more expensive upgrades, it could cost around $200-250 for a T9300/T9500 processor

I do not know the prices in Europe, but they tend to be higher.
