I recently purchased a HP Compaq 8510w (RM256UT#ABA) notebook from CompUSA's business web site. I felt it was a good price for a pre-configured machine.
I also purchased a 2 GB DIMM of Corsair RAM to bring the system up to 4 GB (I'm using 64-bit Vista).
Prior to installing the 2nd DIMM, I tested the OEM RAM. The built-in diagnostics in the BIOS setup all checked out. I made a bootable CD of Memtest86+ V1.70 and ran that. I am getting failures on inversion tests and random pattern tests. I tried re-seating the DIMM to no avail.
I replaced the OEM DIMM with the Corsair DIMM, and it checked out in the built-in diagnostics, as well as Memtest86+.
This seems to indicate that the OEM DIMM has some problems, and I should replace it. However, what would be the best strategy of dealing with HP tech support since the HP built-in diagnostics check out, while the 3rd-party Memtest does not? Any suggestions would be appreicated. Thanks.

Well, my concern was unwarranted. I contacted the HP business tech support via online chat and explained the problem. They agree that the OEM DIMM seemed to be bad and are sending a replacement DIMM. That was much easier than I expected based on my experience with the tech support of other companies!

Usually business support is much better than regular customer support.
