Recently I have been experiencing problems with my graphics card (overheating, artifacts, blue screens) in my HP 8540p laptop, so I decided to replace it with refurbished Quado FX800M. However, I will need new thermal pads and thermal grease. As far as it comes to grease I will use Arctic Cooling MX-2.
Still, I do not know which thermal pads I will need: in particular their thickness and thermal conductivity. Does anyone have any experience in replacing these components in 8540 notebook? I would be grateful for some hints on which thermal pads I ought to buy (0.5mm, 1mm, 1.5mm), as I do not want to buy whole range of them and trash the remaining ones.
I will probably need thermal pads for GPU core and memory as well as for chipset.

I would be grateful for any help!

Ok with all the thermal gease cleaned off how much gap is there between the heatsink and the GPU does a Dime fit between that gap? If not and the space is close enough I would toss the pad away and just use silver thermal paste that works alot better then that pad at heat removal on the GPU. The closer you can get the heatsink to the GPU with the thermal paste the better the heatsink will work for you. I removed all the thermal pads off my laptops and just did some modding of the heatsink making the gap closer to the GPU but not to close and apply thermal paste between it and that work way better then that pad will ever do. Or get a copper pad that will fit between that gap as copper is a more efficient heat conductor and will do more then the pad as moving heat away from your GPU. These may sounds not much but will far extend the life of the GPU if it hasn't already starting to experience GPU failures if no failures then the process I just described will extend the GPU lifespan usage.
