I have a hp 8710p with a t7300 sla45 in it. I would like to put the absolute fastest processor in it that I can. Motherboard is a m2n78-la with a mPGA478mn on it. I have found that there are a few but was wondering about a t9900 or even a t9500 for it but not sure which one to buy. the t9900 I found says SLGEE on it and it says it is a socket P. exactly what socket does my laptop have?? and will the t9900 work in it??

The T9900 probably not work in your CPU as it is 1066 and I think your CPU socket is best rated at to 800 fsb. I would say if it is not to expensive go with a T9300 instead. Other wise I would say get a T8100 since your laptop is a older HP model and speeding more money on the CPU will not give you much benefit for the price you will pay for a T9xxx series CPU. Also you should take a look at this guide that one of the users made. And find your current CPU and you will see where it falls in CPU rating and what CPU you can upgrade with but 800 fsb is the max for your motherboard to handle not 1066...

You're going to be limited to the 'Penryn' Intel Core 2 Duo processors as StormJumper noted. The EliteBook 8710p was offered with them; see here:

The T9300 would be a good value and so would the T8300. Realize that there's not going to be a night and day difference between your T7300 and any of the ones you can upgrade to. Why do you want to upgrade the CPU, if I may ask? There may be better ways to get improved performance.

As Charles mentioned jumping from a T7300 to a Penryn processor isn't not going to be a big step up, though it does help slightly on the thermal side of things. At the end of the day what are you trying to acheive with the system, a faster user experience? If you haven't jumped to a SSD yet then I would rather invest on this over a CPU upgrade as the difference really is like night and day.
