Its not the laptop, its the screen which many people probably have across various laptop models. You might want to get a better one.

LCD panels aren't generally 'adjusted' with manual controls.
If adjustments are possible (and they are NOT always available) it is properly done through the driver and driver software. ICC controls in Vista/Win7 are pretty good but when possible it's 'more effective' to touch the drivers directly if the adjustment features are there.
In any case, a Spider2 is horribly out of date from a hardware and software perspective. It can't properly read high-density LCD screens, those with higher strobe/refresh rates, or weird color gamuts. I don't think that CV has updated the S2 software for 2 or 3 years. -
if I wanted a critique on my hardware or software I would have asked for it!

ok, hows this.
You can't do it.

East,
actually, you specifically asked for a critque (whether you will admit it or not).
I had to stop using S2Pro more than 3 years ago as it was definitely making the colors worse and not better on my systems.
I am using Spyder3Elite v4.02 currently and it gives good results on LCD's with limited hardware controls.
The limiting factor is always the quality of the display - no matter how good a calibrator you have, the monitor has to be able to hold up its end of the deal too. -

Yea, if nothing else you are asking for a critique of what you are trying to do.
It sounds possible. Listen to these guys. Hows that
