Stupid question, but what is the interface the 8710w use? Propably at least SATA, but is it even SATA2?

If you have got the 7K200 then it is SATA:. SATA2 isn't worth worrying about: SATA will handle your HDD's performance and SATA 2 uses more power.

Well, sorry for being so new to this, but does SATA2 drives then work with SATA1 interface? I ask because our local web store has a 320GB SATA2 drive with 7200Krpm (and that is a true speed I'm not willing to go below), but SATA1 are limited to much lower capacity with same speed.

Yes, the HDD can support SATA 2 but will automatically run at SATA 1 if that is all the computer will do. Some notebook HDD manufacturers have added SATA 2 while others have not, one consideration being the increased power consumption of the faster interface.

I've just put the Fujitsu MHZ2320BH (which supports SATA 2) into my notebook which is only SATA 1. At least I think so, HDTune only reports a normal interface speed.

Going off topic here but check in Task Manager to see whether some rogue process is fully loading the CPU. Under light load the CPU utilisation should be less than 10%.

If the CPU utilisation is OK then check the Power Profile to see if this is locking the CPU to the maximum speed. Also check the BIOS to make sure SpeedStep is enabled.

I would also suggest undervolting. See the Undervolting Guide in this forum.
